Agave is Life is a documentary film about mankind’s 10,000 year-long symbiotic alliance with the marvelous agave plant, from which tequila, Mexico’s iconic distilled spirit, is derived. The documentary takes viewers back to a time when hunter-gatherers relied on the agave plant as a source of food, drink, shelter and fiber while roaming desert regions of Mexico and the American Southwest. With the advent of early agriculture, and later, the development of more complex civilizations, agave played a role in the longevity, success, and ritual life of ancient cultures in these regions. Only recently have archaeologists realized how important the agave plant was to pre-Columbian people living in what may seem like marginal environments. It is through their investigations that the story unfolds, starting with feasting rituals and practices among hunter-gatherers and early agave farmers, and ending with current day environmental concerns. Along the way we learn how this unique desert plant, and its products, once integral to human survival, community gatherings, and religious rites, has become embedded in identity, mythology, art, and cultural traditions. After the Spanish Conquest, the once sacred agave was transformed into an economic commodity with meteoric increases in fiber, pulque, and distilled spirit production. In recent decades, however, competition with beer has all but eliminated Mexico’s once flourishing pulque market while synthetics have severely curtailed the agave fiber industry. Tequila and mezcal producers, the survivors of agave’s early commercial success in Mexico, are threatened today by climate change, water scarcity, and the lack of biological diversity in their fields. While biologists and producers struggle to reverse this negative trend, the multi-purpose agave plant rides through another transition for 21st century consumers. Hope for the plant’s future may one day rely upon more traditional agricultural methods and, as in the past, the use of its many products --- from fuel to musical instruments.

The first part of the film shows a pilgrimage to a Christian sanctuary situated close to the residence of the most powerful of the Central Andean mountain spirits (Apus) illustrating the syncretism of Catholic and pre-Hispanic local religi...
This film is set in a community of peasant agriculturalists 2 1/4 miles above sea level in the southern Peruvian Andes. Concentrating on a single family, the film explores aspects of religious and secular life. The first part of the film shows a pilgrimage to a Christian sanctuary situated close to the residence of the most powerful of the Central Andean mountain spirits (Apus) illustrating the syncretism of Catholic and pre-Hispanic local religious traditions. In the second part of the film we see a fertility rite for sheep, and the attempts of certain members of the community to procure government assistance for a motor road to the village which would link them more closely with the rest of Peruvian society. This film portrays the Quechua of the village of Camahuara as being in a sense sealed off from the rest of the world, but it also shows how their way of life is integrated with the Peruvian economy. It has been criticised for emphasising that the desire for change is coming from inside the traditional society rather than being forced on it from without.

This is a documentary about arts, culture and everyday life inside a prison for minors. It was shot during a photography and video workshop with young inmates at the Juvenile Community for Specialized Treatment in San Fernando, Mexico City. Through shared production methods and self-representation we explore alternative ways of approaching and understanding subjects that would normally remain invisible, or are seen only through many social stigmas and prejudices.

While the camera slides across the glamour photos from their heyday, the filmmaker looks on, entranced. He grapples with the incredible fame of his parents. Now that he is reconstructing their relationship, he sees the old film footage through different eyes – as if it might contain the answers he didn’t get as a child, when his parents separated. This merging of family history and film excerpts creates a magical mix of fact and fiction, or 'the real and the celluloid wedding', as the son calls it. The son’s public revelation of how things went wrong is an emancipatory act, as divorce is still a big taboo in Myanmar.
