More than six thousand gold and mineral prospectors have invaded the Nambiquara reserve of Sararé, Brazil, while loggers raid the area's mahogany rich forests. Only pressure from the World Bank, with whom the government of Mato Grosso is negotiating a loan, promises to bring an end to the gross environmental degradation. The government gives the prospectors 60 days to leave the area; the situation becomes increasingly tense as the state police are brought in to evacuate. Poor and desperate for a livelihood, the prospectors don't believe in the Indians' right to have a reservation, asking, "What are they going to do with all that land?"

This video documents an encounter between two groups of indigenous Brazilian people. Wai-Wai, a Waiãpi leader, takes a trip to meet the Zo'é, a group only recently contacted by outsiders. This video documents an encounter between two groups of indigenous Brazilian people. Wai-Wai, a Waiãpi leader, takes a trip to meet the Zo'é, a group only recently contacted by outsiders. Both tribes speak Tupi-Guarani dialects and share many cultural traditions; a rapport quickly develops between Wai-Wai and the Zo'é as they take on the roles of anthropologists, questioning one another about hunting techniques, crafts, and forms of dress. Having had more experience with white society, Wai-Wai is able to warn the Zo'é about the potential danger of gold prospectors. He also introduces video technology, to everyone's fascination, and makes videos of his trip to show to everyone at home.

The Waiapi Indians reflect on how their concept of territory has changed since the arrival of gold prospectors in the 1970s. They recognize a need to demarcate their land in order to prevent destruction of the forest by outsiders. The Waiãpi Indians reflect on how their concept of territory has changed since the arrival of gold prospectors in the 1970s. They recognize a need to demarcate their land in order to prevent destruction of the forest by outsiders. The Waiãpi use independent strategies to address the problem, building villages to warn off prospectors wherever there is gold. With the assistance of anthropologist Dominique Gallois, the Waiãpi finish official demarcation in 1996, creating a new model that allows for Indians to mark out their own territory instead of leaving the job to government contractors. This process allows Indians to know and defend their own boundaries.

In April 1997, the Makuxi Indians of North Roraima commemorate their struggle to have their land holdings recognized by the Brazilian government. Through testimonials, skits and animation, they re-create a history of forced labor and exploitation at the hands of whites. In April 1997, the Makuxi Indians of North Roraima commemorate their struggle to have their land holdings recognized by the Brazilian government. Through testimonials, skits and animation, they re-create a history of forced labor and exploitation at the hands of whites. Miners brought alcohol and disease to the indigenous community, but the Makuxi fought back. Through brave demonstrations and other tactics, they eventually regained their rights and land. Visitors and journalists witness this history lesson, and so do a new generation of Makuxi children, who are learning how vital it is to protect their cultural heritage.

An alternative history primer for the state of Acre presents an Indigenous history divide it into four periods: the time of the hut, when Indians lived in health and peace; the time of running, when their land was invaded; the time of captivity, when they were used for forced labor on rubber plantations; and the time of reclaiming rights, in which they have regained some of their land and rights to education and healthcare. "Nature gives us everything for free," says a Yanomami chief - "all that nature asks in return is that we protect it." In Children of the Land, Brazilian Indian leaders discuss their careful and sustainable use of the land. "Nature gives us everything for free," says a Yanomami chief - "all that nature asks in return is that we protect it." In Children of the Land, Brazilian Indian leaders discuss their careful and sustainable use of the land. The forest provides indigenous people with food, medicine and supplies, and they know that they have to preserve these for future generations. This is reflected in their sustainable lifestyle; the Ashaninka calendar, for example, measures seasons by the reproductive cycles of plants and animals so as to keep these populations healthy. The Baniwa make woven baskets for sale in department stores, and the Ashaninka harvest Mumuru, a plant product used in the cosmetics industry, for sale. However, both groups make sure not to abuse their resources for these ventures, and use them as a vehicle for promoting their culture.

With the colonization of Brazil's Mid-West in the 1950s and the construction of the Transamazonica and other highways in the 1970s, whites began to make large-scale contact with Indians, with disastrous results. Epidemics decimated populations of groups such as the Cinta-Larga, with the deaths amounting in some cases to veritable genocide. With the colonization of BrazilÕs Mid-West in the 1950s and the construction of the Transamazônica and other highways in the 1970s, whites began to make large-scale contact with Indians, with disastrous results. Epidemics decimated populations of groups such as the Cinta-Larga, with the deaths amounting in some cases to veritable genocide. Groups of Indians were separated from relatives, their land parceled out to settlers under the auspices a colonial mythology that advocated "progress" over the rights of indigenous people. Archive footage shows the "pacification" of the Xavantes People, the Cinta Larga People in Rondônia, and the Parakanas in the south of Pará, and how this catastrophic contact decimated these populations. Even into the year 2000, a FUNAI crew works to find small, still-isolated groups that might be under threat from farmers and prospectors. In this video, the last survivor of an annihilated people refuses to make contact.

In Iauaretê, Waterfall of the Jaguars, the Tariano Indians of the upper Rio Negro decide to reclaim their culture after decades of missionary-imposed Catholicism. This involves the restoration of the sacred Iauaretê waterfall, home of the Jaguar people who tried to destroy the mythological Tariano ancestor Ahkomi. Contemporary Tariano leaders also visit a museum in Manaus where they recover precious stolen decorations, in order to put them back into ritual use. The attempt at cultural revival culminates in the rebuilding of the Maloca, the communal house that was destroyed upon the arrival of priests in the 1920s. The house is inaugurated with celebration and traditional dancing, and older people hope that their children and grandchildren continue to reclaim their Indian cultural identity.
