‘Adhiambo’ means ‘the one born in the evening’ in the language of the Luo of western Kenya. The film follows NyaSeme, a married mother and grandmother in her late 30s, during the last month of her pregnancy and through the first weeks of her newborn daughter’s life. The first part of the film focuses on everyday life in NyaSeme’s home, as well as on the work of the anthropologists in the home, who themselves are expecting a child, which is born shortly after NyaSeme’s. The second part follows the various small illnesses that the child, goes through. NyaSeme employs the herbal resources of the bush surrounding the home as well as those of the government dispensary; simultaneously, Otto, the anthropologists’ son falls ill and receives various forms of medical treatment. The film creates a personal account of a woman’s life, motherhood, children and the maintenance of bodily health in rural western Kenya, as well as insights into the reflexive and relational nature of ethnographic fieldwork.

John Palmer arrived in a Wichí community, located in Argentina, thirty years ago as an anthropologist - today he has married a Wichí woman with whom he has five sons in the last 5 years, who babble English, Wichí, and Spanish words. As the legal advisor of the Lapacho Mocho community, and as a part of the family, he works to obtain Qatu’s freedom, a member of the Wichí community who has been in jail for 5 years waiting for an oral hearing o...
John Palmer arrived in a Wichí community, located in Argentina, thirty years ago as an anthropologist - today he has married a Wichí woman with whom he has five sons in the last 5 years, who babble English, Wichí, and Spanish words. As the legal advisor of the Lapacho Mocho community, and as a part of the family, he works to obtain Qatu’s freedom, a member of the Wichí community who has been in jail for 5 years waiting for an oral hearing on a charge of abusing his wife’s daughter. The film gains depth and impact from its more intimate domestic interludes involving John's wife Tojweya their young children - including a baby only weeks old. So while Palmer has achieved considerable eminence in his field, winning the Royal Anthropological Institute's Lucy Mair Medal in 2009, his immersion into Wichí culture, history and customs has become much more than a matter of academic ethnography.

The film "Ignacio's Legacy" documents a journey in early 2016 by Brian, his son Titus, and anthropologists Stephen and Christine Hugh-Jones to show and return these films and other audio-visual material to the Barasana and Makuna peoples. Alongside capturing the journey and the peoples’ reactions to the films, it draws upon the earlier films to explore various forms of cultural change over nearly sixty years.

Spencer represents the link between the armchair anthropologist and the modern fieldworking anthropologist. The series begins by following in the footstep of the British Scientist. It shows his work with the Australian Aborigines – who had, up until then, been regarded as step in the evolutionary ladder between Neolithic men and the 'civilised' Victorian. Spencer went to Australia in 1887 as Professor of Biology at Melbourne University. While there he was invited to join the Horn expedition, an ambitious project to explore Australia's still largely unknown interior. At Alice Springs Spencer met Frank J. Gillen, the operator of the telegraphic station and an initiated elder of the Aranda tribe. It was Gillen's special place in Aboriginal society that enabled Spencer to document the world of this ancient and complex culture through books, glass-plate photographs, wax cylinder recordings and some of the earliest cine films shot outside Europe. Spencer and Gillen made several expeditions together; the data they collected fueled the theories of anthropologists around the world. Some of their film was used in the programme.

There he abandoned the veranda and developed his style of fieldwork, which came to be called participant-observation: speaking the language, living in the community and becoming part of it, making a detailed record of all aspects of native life. Malinowski's intimate experience with Trobriand society generated a growing awareness of the myriad of links that hold society together.
