A detailed overview of contemporary life in the tiny South Pacific country of Tuvalu, this film documents the earth's first sovereign nation faced with total destruction due to the effects of global warming. With a population of about 11,000 living on a total landmass of only 20 square miles – less than Manhattan – spread over nine low-lying atolls 600 miles to the north of Fiji, Tuvalu has been inhabited for over four millenia. The warm-spirited and highly community-oriented people of this ex-British colony struggle to survive economically while confronting the likelihood of having to evacuate their homeland en masse within the next 50 years. As the industrial world just begins to address the threat and causes of global warming, rising seas and increasingly violent changes in climate have already left their marks on this poor island nation. The government of Tuvalu and other concerned organizations are directing their pleas for solutions to the wealthy countries whose high pollution emissions could be the central human contribution to this phenomenon. Observation, narration, and interviews with Tuvalu citizens from various walks of life flesh out a full portrait of a unique community confronting a dubious future on the front lines of a global environmental assault.

Earth has never experienced anything like us: a single species dominating and transforming the planet. Biologist Shane Campbell-Staton travels the globe to explore our impact. Because while we may tell ourselves what it means to be human, the clearest vision of who we are emerges from what we do. In that way, Human Footprint tackles the biggest story of all – the story of who we really are. Episode 6: This episode hits close to home as Shane unravels the history and science of cotton, a crop that reshaped a landscape, a culture, and the very DNA of the American people. Shane explores how a prehistoric coastline laid the foundation for the cultivation of cotton, which became a cornerstone of the American economy. Along the way, Shane begins to realize, “This part of the Human Footprint… is me.”

While inefficient agricultural methods are destroying much of the world's rainforests, the Lacandon Maya of Chiapas in southern Mexico have been practicing a sustainable form of rainforest farming for centuries. Dr. James Nations, an ecological anthropologist, has worked with the Lacandones for many years. In Good Hands follows Nations as he interacts with three Lacandon elders who show how they farm in the forests. The video also examines how culture, mythology and religion influence their agricultural methods. The Lacandon approach to farming provides the basis for developing a practical alternative to destructive rain forest farming. However, only a few families still practice these ancient methods, as modernization and civil strife threaten their traditional way of life.

This ground-breaking series focuses on African innovation, addressing today’s and tomorrow’s problems with courage and imagination in equal measure. It is a fascinating look at how cutting-edge scientific technology from all over the world is being put to use to alleviate the problems faced by Africans today.
The thirteen part series tells stories from all over Africa, and introduces the people who are doing great things – from fighting the escalating gun crime in South Africa to unearthing and diffusing land mines in Mozambique; from astronomy to medicine; and from large scale engineering infrastructure to homegrown solutions to local problems – creating a sustainable future for individuals, families, communities and nations.
Along the scientific journey through the continent we are also treated to the workings of the largest telescope in the Southern hemisphere, stunning footage from the biggest game park in Namibia and inside information on how African athletes maintain their peak performances and prowess.
