By Mohan Gopinath, Kavita Chavali, Dolphy Abraham, and C Kishan Rao. The discussion point in the case revolves around a senior banker in India who used unethical methods and misused his position of trust by making fraudulent withdrawals from the unclaimed balances account in the branch. The mitigating circumstance was that he had to pay for the treatment of his mother who was suffering from bone cancer which the doctors said could be cured with treatment. Unclaimed balances are, in banking parlance, those accounts in a bank in which there have been no operations for many years. The case is based on a composite of real life incidents and individuals. The decision focus in the case is how to react to transgressions of laid down practices in a bank by senior officers even though there were pressing circumstances for them to resort to these transgressions.

By Almaz M. K. Chak and Shige Makino. This study examined whether international exchange programs should continue to be treated as the core experiential learning activity in business study programs in universities in Hong Kong. We proposed that students' preferences, their career orientations as well as the potential learning outcomes of the activity be treated as the determinants. The study identified several benefits, in addition to the "well understood" benefits of foreign language proficiency and cultural awareness. We found that the self-directed learning skill, a competency crucial for students when pursuing global careers or lifelong learning, could be cultivated more effectively through such experiential learning activities as international exchange programs and local internships rather than traditional classroom teaching approaches. Interestingly, the findings showed that both international exchange programs and local internships could foster this critical competency. Considering that local internships are much more affordable to most students, the findings warrant attention for decision making of "out-of-classroom" programs in curricula design.

By Nitin Pangarkar and Jie Wu. In February 2009, Singapore-based Asia Pacific Breweries (APB) was at a critical juncture in the development of its regionalization strategy. Its extensive network of breweries in the Asia Pacific region had significantly boosted its revenues, profits, as well the reputation of its key brands, especially Tiger. More importantly, the company had established a strong presence in rapidly growing markets such as Vietnam, Cambodia, and the Hainan province of China, thus enhancing the company’s growth prospects. Despite repeated attempts at reorganization, profitability in China had remained elusive, however! APB’s management was wondering if changes in its portfolio and resource allocation might further improve overall performance.

By Eric D. Yordy and Katlin Bryant. In 2009, Apple released the Baby Shaker app through its Apple Store. The app was only on the market for a couple of days, but CNN named the app one of the worst business decisions of 2009. This paper explores the issues of content control and censorship in the app industry using a fictional company and characters based on facts associated with the Baby Shaker app release. The case puts students in the position of a manager at an app development company who is tasked with responding to the public outcry caused by the release of the Baby Shaker app. Using the COVER model for ethical decision-making, the instructor’s manual guides faculty through various ethical theories to assist students with developing critical and ethical decision-making skills.

By David Blaylock and David Conklin. The 2007/08 financial crisis and subsequent recession precipitated discussions on strengthening the stability of financial systems. A central focus have been negotiations to create an internationally consistent regulatory framework for the world’s banks. These negotiations have included improving the capital base of banks, supplementing the risk-based capital requirements with a leverage ratio, creating counter-cyclical capital buffers, introducing measures to limit counterparty risk, and establishing required liquidity ratios. However, serious gaps remain. Some nations may not agree to implement the new regulations. Non-bank financial institutions are not included. National regulations will still differ. Unintended consequences may have negative effects. Consequently, further negotiations to strengthen the world’s financial systems will likely continue.

By Peter N. Nemetz. The recently completed World Summit on Sustainable Development in South Africa, convened to assess global progress since the landmark Rio conference of 1992 (UN, 1992), has reaffirmed the international commitment to the concept of sustainability. One result of this conference will be increasing pressure upon the business community to incorporate principles of sustainability into their business practices. Several critical questions face managers and owners unfamiliar with this potential new threat to business as usual: What is sustainable development? How should business respond? What kind of opportunities and threats lie in the new business environment, and how are such conditions related to sustainable development? Are the opportunities and threats related to each company's ability to achieve or move closer to sustainable development, or do opportunities and threats arise from implementing sustainable development practices? This paper attempts to answer these questions and provide an introductory guide to issues of sustainable development and associated analytical tools for business school students at both the senior and MBA levels.
