A report on nodules, rocks that contain essential minerals to build supercomputers, cell phones, and electric cars. Nodules form when shells or rocks on the ocean floor absorb metals from seawater. The minerals contained have an estimated net worth of $16 trillion. The process for collecting nodules is referred to as “harvesting” as opposed to “mining” as no robots, drilling, or digging will be used. The United States is not among the many countries preparing to harvest these minerals due to a failure to ratify a U.N. deep sea mining treaty. Those in favor of the U.S. ratifying the treaty say the country will end up reliant on China, which has the most comprehensive harvesting strategy, as these minerals become increasingly essential. Includes interviews with Gerard Barron, CEO of Deepgreen Metals; Warwick Miller, a geologist; Kris Van Nijen, managing director of Global Sea Mineral Resources; Dr. Craig Smith, an oceanographer at the University of Hawaii; and Jonathan White, a retired rear admiral who runs a non-profit to protect oceans.

It's been called the lungs of the earth. But the Amazon is also a lawless jungle, where criminals and profiteers plunder the forest for its riches. Communities are battling to stop loggers stripping the rainforest of its ancient timber, but many people depend on revenue from the illegal trade. The result is that some towns are in civil conflict, with neighbours clashing over the exploitation of their unique environment, one of the largest remaining wilderness areas on Earth. The state of Para alone exports billions of dollars in illegal hardwood. It seems that everywhere people are cutting down trees without permission. Commercial loggers send armies with chainsaws to cut timber for export, almost always illegally. The Amazon River is the heart of the illegal logging trade. The logs are simply loaded on a boat and exported to countries like the United States, Europe and Australia. Once the valuable timber has been removed, the land is given over to cattle ranchers and soy farmers. All over the Amazon people are being run off their land in growing numbers. Growing numbers of profiteers - ranchers, farmers, and land grabbers - are seizing whole areas of the Amazon at gunpoint from their inhabitants. People don't want to leave their homes but with no one enforcing the law they're afraid and there's no one here to protect them. But when the law is enforced, this causes other problems. The federal environmental authorities shut the logging town of Uruara down because 80% of the timber trade here is illegal. Everyone, from the foresters to shopkeepers, and even the men driving horse carts, have found themselves without jobs. Says a spokesman for the authorities: "When we go to bed at night it really is hard to know that breadwinners won't get any wages the next day and sometimes their families will go hungry. But that is our job, unfortunately. We have to do it."

The Future of Energy journeys across America to shine a light on the communities and individuals who are at the forefront of the clean energy revolution taking practical steps to transition from fossil fuels to renewable power. Solar wind and water could power the planet by the year 2050 according to experts in the film substantially reducing carbon emissions. What's needed is the social and political willpower to make the change on a large scale. Two model towns are highlighted for their exemplary steps towards clean energy: Greensburg, Kansas and Lancaster, California. After a devastating tornado in 2007, the town of Greensburg decided to rebuild and “go green” with 100% renewables harnessing the very energy that destroyed them by building wind turbines. A local politician admits that many residents were skeptical at first, but soon realized "It’s common sense.” The city of Lancaster set a goal to become the nation’s first “net zero” community, and now runs on solar power with panels installed on practically every rooftop available and even new structures. The mayor notes the economics of renewables are a "no-brainer" as they’ve offset many energy costs. The film also highlights the broader citizen movements for clean energy, showcasing especially how the youth of today are helping to lead the change. The Future of Energy illustrates that renewable power on a large scale is not just a dream, but rather a viable option already being implemented by many communities, cities and businesses. The examples and solutions highlighted are designed to inspire others to consider adopting clean, renewable power as a smart choice with substantial economic, public health and environmental benefits. FEATURED IN THE FILM - Mark Z. Jacobson, Prof. of Atmospheric Sciences, Stanford - Danny Kennedy, co-founder, Sungevity - Joanna Macy, author and eco-philosopher - Bill McKibben, author Schumann Distinguished Scholar in Environmental Studies, Middlebury College - Diane Moss, Founder, Renewables 100 Policy Institute - Julian Mocine-Mcquine, Education and Outreach Director, Green For All - Rex Parris, Mayor, Lancaster, CA - Jeremy Rifkin, author, Third Industrial Revolution- Pandora Thomas, co-founder of Earthseed Consulting LLC.
