Sewage. Not your most popular topic, but certainly an important one; especially since it's created every day, not just by individuals in homes and apartments, but also by institutions, hospitals and commercial and industrial establishments. Fortunately, sewage treatment, or domestic waste water treatment, is a modern-age triumph of technology, and people can take heart that a marriage between nature and modern sewage treatment technology has taken place. In this informative program we learn of the stages involved in sewage treatment, as well as the physical, chemical and biological processes required for removing contaminants from waste water.

'Recommended. An ahead-of-its-time program whose time has arrived.' -Science Books & Films Global warming, ozone depletion, acid rain - all are attributable to the automobile. It is obvious the time has come to find alternative ways to preserve our planet. Solar electric cars are one possible answer, but are they for real and can they really work? This classic program looks back at the first electric cars and reminds us how ahead-of-their-time people had visionary ideas about cars. We understand now that these vehicles were for real and discover how progress has been made in developing them. We meet well-intended novices who experiment with solar energy and electric cars; also we witness a 'Tour de Sol,' an excellent example of how everyday people can get first-hand experience with engineering design. In the end we realize electric cars will be an important part of the 21st century; the Chevy Volt and the Nissan Leaf are just the beginning..

'Recommended. Emphasizes the contributions that science and technology can make to the creation of a greener world. Science classes will find the examples cited intriguing.' -School Library Journal Mankind appears to be the source of all the most serious pollution threats to the planet and there are few branches of man's activity that do not contribute to the problem. There is no simple overall solution to reducing the pollution of our planet, but there are many small solutions. This program looks at many of them: a quick and easy way of assessing soil pollution; energy efficient power stations and traffic systems; farming in sympathy with nature; reducing pollution in manufacturing processes and waste disposal.

As the world begins to wake up to the dangers and the damage caused by pollution, the pressure to become more environmentally responsible increases. In India, environmentalists are calling for action to stop the Taj Mahal from turning yellow from the effects of pollution. A New York University study has indicated that living in a city with high levels of air pollution can be as hazardous to your health as living with a smoker and inhaling second hand smoke. In California, scientists from the Scripps Institute are conducting a study of California's renowned smog to determine its origin. Meanwhile, the rivers of Bangladesh, Iraq, and China are choking with modern-day pollution that researchers say puts millions at risk, and of the efforts to save these rivers of life. Also, how a Philippines couple has devised an ingenious way to recycle solid waste and profit from their innovative idea in the process.

The transport sector has long been known as a major source of pollution affecting the air, damaging our health, animal life and the environment. Cars are a major source of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming.
Road transport is responsible for the emission of hydrocarbons, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, metals and a variety of organic compounds into the environment. Emissions are higher when there is a concentration of traffic levels. The challenge is to minimize the problems associated with this type of transport emission and to create a safer future through a cleaner environment. Transport pollution is being closely monitored around the world and many experiments are being undertaken. In the UK a hybrid bus has been invented, partially powered with electricity and the Vectrix Super-Scooter is fitted with a battery. Colombia has launched an electric car called The Reva. Experiments are also being made with restaurant and cooking oils used to fuel cars and buses. An increasing number of car companies are looking to sell their more environmentally friendly concepts through alternative fuels and more attractive designs in their plight for cleaner transport.

The ever-growing population and continued economic growth that are taking place worldwide continue to add to the problem of carbon emissions. Activities, which produce carbon emissions fall into four main categories. Electricity generation, transportation, industrial activities and commercial and residential use. Globally, we need to achieve a 90 percent reduction in our carbon emissions by the year 2050 to have a chance at preventing the dangerous effects that these gases are having on our environment. The challenge is to minimize the problems and create a safer future through a cleaner environment. Energy saving is the main reason behind replacing old lights in the Windmills in the Netherlands with LED lights. A global race is on to find energy alternatives to replace fossil fuels with one company setting up a massive solar field in Israel’s southern desert. In the UK, thermal imaging cameras are being used to assess insulation an efficient way to effectively reduce carbon, while in Sweden a quiet city leads the way in environmental planning.
