Kenya Rain Harvesting- Masai women in Kenya are harvesting rainwater and collecting it in tanks, which has improved water supplies and done away with the daily trek to collect river water. Organic Mattresses- Welsh sheep are noisy but very hardy. Native to wales and its sometimes harsh environment, they are tough little animals with soft pure fleece. Their wool is keenly sought-after for a variety of uses. The strength and purity of the wool has helped a small welsh company realize its dream to produce truly organic bedding. Green Donkeys- the 14th century town of Castelbuono is already top of the list for recycling in Sicily, and the mayor has enlisted the services of Teresa the donkey and three of her friends in the battle against Pollution. Yangtze Pollution- Stretching 6,000 kilometres, China’s mighty Yangtze river is the world’s third longest. Sadly it is also one of the dirtiest, the result of people, pollution and dams. It absorbs 40% of China’s waste water from factories, fields and city sewers that run beside it. The pollution is killing the fish and endangering the health of millions of people. Chile Earthworms- With water an increasingly precious commodity, the humble earthworm could well prove to be an environmental hero. A chemical free alternative to treating human and industrial waste, the worms are so effective they’ve joined the workforce of some of Chile's largest companies. US E-waste- The United States Government estimates that Americans generate more than three-million tons of electronic waste every year. UK Wind Power- Rising 108 metres above sea level, these wind turbines are the very visible face of Britain’s first offshore commercial wind farm, powering over 30,000 homes.

Greenhouse Barge- Showing New Yorkers how is this travelling greenhouse barge which grows enough vegetables to supply 25 people for one year. Its designer hopes that it will encourage residents to use the city’s 5,000 hectares of rooftops to create their own vegetable gardens. Newspaper Handbags- When part of the Manila’s Smokey Mountain Rubbish Dump area was redeveloped for low-cost housing, these women decided to find a new source of income. Turning misfortune into opportunity, they got together and formed a small co-operative, transforming discarded newspaper into fashionable handbags. Amazon School- The western corner of Brazil’s Amazon forest is where the isolated Ashaninka Indians have lived for over 400 years. They have opened their own indigenous school, passing on tribal knowledge through environmental projects and food production, as well as offering aid to other indigenous groups of the forest. The objective is to teach Amazon residents how to make a living without harming the environment. Bubble Baby/Buses- Big smoke. Heavy vehicles transporting goods we want. Toxic fumes fuelling diseases We don’t. The fear of respiratory illnesses including asthma has prompted many precautions. For young Lloyd it’s the bubble, a protective cocoon that fits over his stroller. Designed to keep out pollution it’s a safeguard Lloyd’s parents feel is worth taking. Uganda Biofuels/Coconuts- In a world increasingly concerned about carbon dioxide emissions, the use of clean, renewable fuels is a growing trend. Biofuels, produced from plant sources such as palm oil, are becoming very popular and lucrative. Israel Dung Power- In the heart of Israel’s agricultural region, cow manure from local dairy farms is being used to generate electricity. Using technology imported from Holland, the facility is the first of its kind in Israel, and the largest in the world. Dominican Whales- Leaving the cold waters of the North Atlantic, 80% of the worlds humpback whales travel thousands of kilometres in the annual trek for the mating season. And from all around the globe, flocking to the same Caribbean waters are the whale-watchers, groups of tourists keen to catch a glimpse of the Humpbacks, one of the largest animals in the world.

Eco Bike- Good-looking, powerful and kind on the wallet as well as the environment...It’s the Vectrix Super Scooter. Ten years in development it produces zero carbon emissions, yet performs like a petrol-fuelled machine. Rhino- This new arrival at Budapest Zoo was cause for international celebration. For one thing, the female rhino is a welcome addition to the critically endangered White Rhino population. But particularly exciting for animal conservationists is the fact that she’s the first ever rhino birth resulting from artificial insemination. Bio-diesel Truck- It was the very last leg of a ‘wicked’ trip. Two young Americans set off from Deadhorse in northern Alaska and drove their vegetable oil-fuelled truck to the literal end of the road--where Argentina’s highway 3 stops at the tip of South America. The trip was complete after nine months and hundreds of stops on two continents to ask for people’s used cooking oil. Reclaiming The Desert- For China, home to part of the Gobi Desert, its increasing spread has become a serious problem. Annual storms dump sand on major cities and encroaching desert has displaced herders and farmers, eating up valuable arable land. The UN Warns that a deteriorating environment could drive about 50 million Chinese from their homes by 2010. Office Art- In London, ten student sculptors from the royal college of art presented an exhibition of works, all made from recycled office waste. Using photocopiers, stationery, filing folders and even thousands of staples, the students showed that art can be made from discarded materials that would normally go to landfill. Saving Turtles- They may look like sacks of potatoes but these bags contain precious cargo. Indian authorities rescued hundreds of endangered turtles being smuggled to eastern West Bengal state. Police arrested six others and spared over 1600 turtles the death sentence. Glacier- The city of El Alto, on the outskirts of La Paz in Bolivia. At over 4,000 metres altitude it’s one of the highest cities in the world, but the nearby glacier is dwindling, and with it El Alto’s water supply. Eco-friendly Housing- Francis Court is a block of 15 apartments in Britain’s West Midlands. At first glance it looks quite normal until you notice some of its rather unusual design features. It’s an innovative eco-friendly housing project and represents an important element of the British government’s push for a 60% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by the year 2050.

Planes And Trains- Planes, trains and, of course, automobiles--for many years a major source of the world’s pollution, but today increasingly striving for clean, renewable fuels and greater fuel efficiencies. Rewilding Tigers- This rare South China tiger is part of an ambitious breeding and rewilding program, seen as a last chance to save the subspecies. Trash Art- Tourists and locals at Rome’s iconic Piazza Del Popolo were in for a bit of a surprise when a horde of visitors arrived unannounced. In what was described as a 'peaceful invasion', 1,000 trash people sculptures made their Italian debut. Water For Africa- The United Nations has pledged to halve water scarcity in Africa by 2015. Each year, two million people die from drinking contaminated water and an estimated forty billion hours are spent walking to collect water, often by children. Water Health- Around the world, waterways are getting sick because of our medicines. Unwanted and out of date prescription drugs rapidly find their way into the water supplies as people dispose of them incorrectly. Spectacled Bear- There was cause for celebration at Buenos Aires Zoo with the birth of a healthy and frisky spectacled bear. After a trouble-free eight-month gestation, the baby bear was born healthy and playful, representing another achievement in the preservation of the species. Sri Lanka Forest- The soothing sounds of waterfalls in Sri Lanka's pristine Sinharaja rain forest could give the sense that all is well here. But Sri Lanka's famed rain forest is suffering due to irregular rainfall. Galapagos Tourism- A tourism boom in Galapagos Islands has many worried about the fragile balance of the archipelago's fabled ecosystem with its unique wildlife. The volcanic islands, west of Ecuador’s coast, were once a refuge for pirates and the inspiration for Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution.

Formula Green/Petrol And Oil Usage- Hemp, potatoes and cashew nut shells are not your average car components but they’ve all been used to successfully build a biodegradable racing car. Displayed at London’s Science Museum it’s one of two cars built by students at UK Universities. Both cars are high Performance green machines--capable of reaching speeds of up to 150 miles--or 240 kilometres--per hour, putting a lot of petrol guzzlers to shame. Shangri La- Cranes high in the mountains of Shangri La, in the wetlands of the Napahai Lake, are the breeding grounds of a Tibetan symbol of peace. The black Necked Crane is revered by Tibetans who attempt to protect the endangered species in the face of habitat loss and human activity. Congo Forest- The world’s second largest tropical forest after the Amazon is the forest of the Congo basin. About two-thirds of the forest lies within the Democratic Republic of Congo. Despite a moratorium on new logging contracts since 2002, international companies have snared vast areas of forest land from local communities. Taj Mahal- The Taj Mahal--one of the wonders of the world, jewel of Muslim art, and a 17th Century monument to love, tainted by modern times. A yellow hue of pollution is discolouring the once shimmering white marble and fungus gnaws away at the inner chambers. Gold Rush- Guiyu, a town in Southern China's Guangdong Province, has become a modern day gold rush town. Instead of retrieving gold from streams and riverbeds, family-run workshops look through abandoned electronic and electrical waste to extract valuable metals such as copper and gold. Solar Schools- As part of the drive to reduce Britain’s carbon emissions, schools across the country are being fitted with solar panels. The Solar for Schools program enables energy conservation while teaching children the merits of protecting the environment.
