An extremely powerful film showing the terrible risks that Africans will take to get to The Promised Land. Juan Medina, an Argentine photographer, arrived in Spain twenty years ago. Medina was looking for a better life and decided to settle in Fuerteventura, attracted by a tourist slogan portraying it as 'The Tranquil Isle.' He could not have guessed then that he would be an eye witness to the tragic exodus of Africans to Europe. Over the last ten years, 32,000 Africans have landed on the coast of the Canary Islands in makeshift boats. Many have died in the attempt, drowned in the 100 or so kilometers of seas separating the islands from the African mainland. One night in November 2004, Juan was on board a Spanish police patrol vessel. A drifting craft was spotted full of immigrants. But the makeshift boat capsized: 11 people drowned and 29 were rescued.

They came aboard rickety boats or hidden in the bowels of transport trucks. These children have immigrated alone, without their parents. In 2018, Spain received more than 13,000 migrant children – mostly from Morocco or sub-Saharan Africa. While they mainly land in Andalusia, most of them dream of going to another Spanish region: Catalonia. The Catalan child welfare services offer them a reception and protection system that is unparalleled in Europe. On the heights of Barcelona, 47 migrant children live in the “Mas Pins” reception center. In that environment, they have the freedom to live as any other child: they go to the local school, learn a trade, play football... They have fled violence and misery, taken dangerous paths, crossed the Mediterranean... And now, thousands of kilometers away from their families, helped by their educators, their teachers or the staff of the center, they aspire to become full-fledged European citizens. The Catalan protection services help them from the time they arrive until they are 21 years old.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of people from South America attempt to illegally cross the border between the United States and Mexico – trying to escape the violence in their homeland. Donald Trump's policies have made them unwelcome in a country where anything is possible. They are Salvadorians, Hondurans or Mexicans. Last year, more than a million of them were arrested within the United States after illegally entering the country. The Trump administration has been treating them like common criminals: sent to prison for months, forced to wear electronic bracelets, or deported before they could even apply for asylum. José is a 25-year-old Salvadoran; he risks being killed by gangs in his country. He is now seeking asylum and protection in the United States.

Providing a comprehensive and up-to-date historical overview of Mexican migration to the U.S., Beyond la Frontera: The History of Mexico-U.S. Migration examines the transnational and historical impact of migratory trends as they developed in Mexico and the U.S. from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. Featuring essays by leading authors in the field, the book utilizes both a chronological and thematic structure, referencing mutually influential periods in Mexican and Mexican-American history. Taking into consideration the bi-national historical factors and narrative constructions of Mexican migration, Beyond la Frontera also describes how we may better understand the persistent legislative debates surrounding migrant rights and national sovereignty.

The modern German-Jewish experience through the rise of Nazism in 1933 was characterized by an explosion of cultural and intellectual creativity. Yet well after that history has ended, the influence of Weimar German-Jewish intellectuals has become ever greater. Hannah Arendt, Gershom Scholem, Theodor Adorno, Walter Benjamin, Franz Rosenzweig, and Leo Strauss have become household names and possess a continuing resonance. Beyond the Border seeks to explain this phenomenon and analyze how the German-Jewish legacy has continuingly permeated wider modes of Western thought and sensibility, and why these émigrés occupy an increasingly iconic place in contemporary society. Steven Aschheim traces the odyssey of a fascinating group of German-speaking Zionists--among them Martin Buber and Hans Kohn--who recognized the moral dilemmas of Jewish settlement in pre-Israel Palestine and sought a binationalist solution to the Arab-Israel conflict. He explores how German-Jewish émigré historians like Fritz Stern and George Mosse created a new kind of cultural history written against the background of their exile from Nazi Germany and in implicit tension with postwar German social historians. And finally, he examines the reasons behind the remarkable contemporary canonization of these Weimar intellectuals--from Arendt to Strauss--within Western academic and cultural life. Beyond the Border is about more than the physical act of departure. It also points to the pioneering ways these émigrés questioned normative cognitive boundaries and have continued to play a vital role in addressing the predicaments that engage and perplex us today.
