When adults fight, children are the losers. They have neither mental nor physical strength to deal with the horrors of war. Finding headless bodies, limps and massacred people leaves scars never to be healed. This is the situation in Afghanistan
War trauma seriously affects the emotional and intellectual development of children ruining their chances of growing up as balanced individuals. A capacity much needed in a country suffering from decades of war. Six million Afghan children are estimated to be steeped in crises. Hundreds of billions of dollars are spent on the war. Compared to these amounts hardly anything is spent on the children. Experience shows that it is easy, cheap and feasible to help the minors and thus reducing the risk of them becoming future aggressors. This documentary pictures Afghan children, their life and background and some of the people deeply involved in helping children victimised by war.
The documentary has been researched since 2003 – shot in 2007 and 2008 in several locations in Afghanistan from Tora Bora to Kabul

NATO has a problem on its hands. It is called Kosovo. Two years ago, in response to the mass ethnic cleansing of Kosovo Albanians, NATO bombed Yugoslavia for 78 days forcing Milosevic into retreat. The results of this bombing - a dangerous power vacuum in Kosovo itself, with Albanian nationalism spilling over viciously into neighbouring Macedonia and Southern Serbia; not to mention the plight of Kosovo's own Serbian minority after two years as victims of murder and mayhem. It seems the boot is firmly on the other foot. Has NATO perhaps been a touch naive?

This wrenching documentary, shot in Iraq, less than one hundred miles from ISIS-controlled territory, shows an unprecedented in-depth perspective on the daily lives and feelings of refugees. The film features compelling candid testimonies of Syrian refugees who wish to convey their situation to the world with a sense of growing urgency. Scored to Gabriel Faure’s Requiem, the documentary is an unflinching portrait of the dire conditions and anxiety faced by refugees, as well as a celebration of the human spirit facing adversity. Despite the bleak plight of the refugees, this is a film of hope. This is a film of tremendous suffering and even greater courage, and a universal reminder of the civilian toll and trauma of modern warfare. Requiem for Syrian Refugees is an artistic statement against overwhelming indifference to the suffering of millions, and a non-partisan call for humanity and compassion.

While much attention has been given to the women survivors of wartime rape, this is the first film to focus on the children conceived through such violence. It follows the stories of offspring in Bangladesh, Bosnia, Rwanda and Nicaragua. Ryan was born out of such violence in Bangladesh and adopted in infancy by a Canadian couple. He returns to his country of origin in search of information about his mother and the Pakistani soldier who raped her during Bangladesh's struggle for independence. He worries that he may have inherited an "evil gene" from this father. His mother was one of 250,000 women raped during that war. In Rwanda, Tutsi women are afraid to testify against their attackers for fear of reprisal. One daughter, the child of rape, is adored by her mother because all her other children were massacred in the genocide. In Bosnia, many women were able to obtain abortions to avoid bearing the children of their enemies. The documentary is a powerful indicator of the dimension of this crime of war. Yesterday in Rwanda is a haunting film that focuses on one survivor of the genocide and her experience of trauma, displacement and hope. Claire Wihogora emigrated to Canada in 1998, four years after her father, brother and countless other family and friends were killed. The film portrays Claire carrying on with her life today in Toronto, while inevitably haunted by terrible memories of Rwanda. On film she recounts how she and her sister hid in the brush while all around her people were massacred. Nothing can help her forget the hundred days when 800,000 members of the Hutu and Tutsi tribes were slaughtered. Yet she finds comfort in telling her story in schools "to share it to make sure it never happens again." Also, she has founded Women in Rwanda, which links female genocide survivors now living in North America in a support system. The film achieves a fascinating interplay of past and present, as images from Claire's everyday life in Toronto (grey tones) are differentiated from the images of Kigali rendered in color.
