This is a multi-award winning documentary about Unit 731, Japan's secret World War II biological and chemical weapons facility in the Chinese town of Harbin where biological weapons were developed during the Japanese Occupation. The film uses the same footage as seen from two points of view. The first half gives the perspective of the Chinese government and describes the horrors and atrocities that occurred during World War II at the facility. The second half, using almost the exact same footage, describes Unit 731 from the Japanese revisionist perspective which is largely supported by the ruling Liberal Democratic Party in Japan. Although its cruel experiments on living people produced thousands of casualties, this activity is still denied by a number of Japanese historians and politicians. Generational change has contributed to the escalating history problem between Japan, China, and the two Koreas. Not only were the majority of Asians born and educated after the war; as a result of the education they received in their own countries, their memories and ideas of the war have become more divergent. Usage of the same shots in both parts of the film ironically demonstrates the potential to misuse film images for political purposes. College Adult

He lost his parents and three sisters and was saved by his cunning and determined grandfather who enabled the remaining family members to survive the rigors of forced labor in the countryside. Now thirty, and recently married, Kodaim resolves to revisit the land of his childhood, to re-trace his terrifying journey to freedom. He needs to "face the demons" by putting the images of terror to rest and restoring the memory of his parents. Along with Kodaim's personal story, this compelling documentary traces the history of Cambodia from the reign of King Sihanouk, to his overthrow, with American support, by Lon Nol, a right wing former police chief. This corrupt regime was toppled by the insurgent Khmer Rouge and the country spiraled downward into mayhem and genocide. We hear first hand how the cities were emptied out, and the professional class forced into rural areas to work the land. People starved, sickened and died. When war broke out between Vietnam and Cambodia, Kodaim and his grandfather fled to safety in Vietnamese-controlled Cambodia. But their odyssey did not end there and we learn how they picked their way through mine fields and trekked through mountains without food or water. The path of escape would lead to Thailand and finally to the safe haven of Canada. This vivid story of survival and human renewal is a memorable addition to audiovisual resources on southeast Asia. It is Lieberman’s background as a child of the Holocaust that has led him to explore the effects of the genocide on today’s young Cambodians. Director's Statement. A personal message from Robert:As a child of the Holocaust, I was initially drawn to Cambodia because I was curious to see if there were any lingering effects of the Khmer Rouge genocide in today’s young people. I was determined not to make a doom and gloom movie. Rather, I wanted to provide a sweeping portrait of the country, its people and history, its politics and psychology. Of course there was no way to avoid Cambodia’s darkest period. I got lucky and got a two-hour, eyeball-to-eyeball interview with Hun Sen, Cambodia’s strongman/prime minister who never gives interviews. Rather than using a crew in Cambodia, I shot the 149 interviews recording the sound by myself and using only available lighting. It allowed people to be comfortable enough to share their most intimate thoughts. My intention is that this be a story of hope and recovery told through the Cambodian people— the young and old, artists and teachers, politicians and just plain ordinary people. Having lived through the Vietnam war, I was forced to come to grips with Nixon and Kissinger’s secret bombing and incursion into this neutral country that helped set the stage for the rise of the Khmer Rouge. It strikes me that in the present political climate the film has an immediacy that makes the story today as relevant as ever. Our production team’s hope is that this film will build on the major success of our previous film “They Call It Myanmar.”

While Korea groaned under the harsh colonial rule of Imperial Japan from 1932 until 1945, the Japanese military coerced, tricked, and forced more than 200,000 women of Korea into a brutal and systematic form of sexual slavery on an unimaginable scale. Forbidden to leave the rickety shacks hastily constructed near the front lines of Imperial Japan's aggressive wars, often with a blanket as the room's only "furniture", they were forced to have sex with some 30-40 men every day. Behind Forgotten Eyes presents the stories of a few brave Korean women who have come forward and broken the silence exposing a past that some may want to stay buried. To this day, the Japanese government has yet to formally apologize or pay compensation to these women. How does a young person maintain resilience and humanity in the face of vicious racism, unspeakable violence and unfolding genocide? This is the story of Holocaust Survivor Ben Stern, as he explores the question that haunts: how did he emerge from overwhelming physical pain and psychological terror, determined to reject violence, and remain dedicated to a life of courage, kindness and hope? After 2 ghettos, 9 concentration camps, and 2 death marches in Nazi Europe, Ben builds a new life in the U.S.--only to face American Nazis and their plan to march in his adopted hometown, Skokie, Illinois, 40 years later. Ben stands up, speaks out and sparks a fierce public battle over Hate Speech. Despite repeated death threats and even buying a gun, Ben rejects vengeance. He defies many who said, “Stay home”, and builds huge national support. In the end, Ben won - the Nazi march was cancelled. Ben--the mystery and wonder of his life and his story, an astounding and cautionary tale--ignites conversation and inspires commitment to action for social justice – today. And a new generation gets it.

Scored to Gabriel Faure’s Requiem, the documentary is an unflinching portrait of the dire conditions and anxiety faced by refugees, as well as a celebration of the human spirit facing adversity. Despite the bleak plight of the refugees, this is a film of hope. This is a film of tremendous suffering and even greater courage, and a universal reminder of the civilian toll and trauma of modern warfare.
