But the peaceful protests were brutally suppressed, and the once united rebel movement fell apart. Najjar returns to Syria to investigate why the rebels are failing in Aleppo, the city of his birth. In the heat of battle, he discovers how danger comes not only from the outside, but also from within, as two rebel leaders operate opposing strategies. In meetings, during a ceasefire, at a party and in the midst of fighting, it becomes only too apparent that there's no brotherhood among the rebels. How can such a divided group defeat a leader who appears to be able to draw on inexhaustible resources from outside the country?

Opening with a montage of four hundred years of race injustice in America, this powerful documentary provides the historical context for the establishment of the 60's civil rights movement. Rare clips of Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Fred Hampton, and other activists transport one back to those tumultuous times. Organized by Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton, the Black Panther Party embodied every major element of the civil rights movement which preceded it and inspired the black, brown, yellow, Native American, and women's power movements which followed.
The party struck fear in the hearts of the "establishment" which viewed it as a terrorist group. Interviews with former US Attorney General Ramsey Clark, CIA officer Philip Agee, and FBI agents Wes Swearingen and Bill Turner shockingly detail a "secret domestic war" of assassination, imprisonment, and torture as the weapons of repression. Yet, the documentary is not a paean to the Panthers, for while it praises their early courage and moral idealism, it exposes their collapse due to megalomania, corruption, drugs, and narcissism.
Broadcast in 19 countries abroad and winner of 9 awards, the film is an important look at the turmoils of the 60's and its leading players.

He lost his parents and three sisters and was saved by his cunning and determined grandfather who enabled the remaining family members to survive the rigors of forced labor in the countryside. Now thirty, and recently married, Kodaim resolves to revisit the land of his childhood, to re-trace his terrifying journey to freedom. He needs to "face the demons" by putting the images of terror to rest and restoring the memory of his parents. Along with Kodaim's personal story, this compelling documentary traces the history of Cambodia from the reign of King Sihanouk, to his overthrow, with American support, by Lon Nol, a right wing former police chief. This corrupt regime was toppled by the insurgent Khmer Rouge and the country spiraled downward into mayhem and genocide. We hear first hand how the cities were emptied out, and the professional class forced into rural areas to work the land. People starved, sickened and died. When war broke out between Vietnam and Cambodia, Kodaim and his grandfather fled to safety in Vietnamese-controlled Cambodia. But their odyssey did not end there and we learn how they picked their way through mine fields and trekked through mountains without food or water. The path of escape would lead to Thailand and finally to the safe haven of Canada. This vivid story of survival and human renewal is a memorable addition to audiovisual resources on southeast Asia. War trauma seriously affects the emotional and intellectual development of children ruining their chances of growing up as balanced individuals. A capacity much needed in a country suffering from decades of war. Six million Afghan children are estimated to be steeped in crises. Hundreds of billions of dollars are spent on the war. Compared to these amounts hardly anything is spent on the children. Experience shows that it is easy, cheap and feasible to help the minors and thus reducing the risk of them becoming future aggressors. This documentary pictures Afghan children, their life and background and some of the people deeply involved in helping children victimised by war.
The documentary has been researched since 2003 – shot in 2007 and 2008 in several locations in Afghanistan from Tora Bora to Kabul

This poignant film puts a human face on a tragedy that occurs daily. First we visit a small village in Oaxaca where more than half the men have emigrated to the United States to send money home. From here we follow the story of one young woman who made the journey to follow her husband, but died of dehydration in the desert. Then the film goes to Tijuana where thousands of people have desperately attempted the crossing, only to be thrown back. We learn of the hardships imposed by heat and thirst and abusive border guards. Finally, we hear first hand from a border guard, a human rights activist, and a citizen who actually goes into the desert each weekend to provide water for the fugitives. This is a memorable portrait of people who risk everything to come to "the land of plenty" --- and often lose this gamble. College Adult

When he was filmed, Emil Synek in his eighties, lived in exile in Paris with his constant companion, a poodle Fifi. Emil's life was shaped by the politics of Europe. When the Nazis invaded his country he fled to London, where he joined the exiled government of Eduard Benes. In post-war Czechoslovakia he served as a diplomat until the Communist takeover of 1948 forced him and his family to flee again to the West. All his works and any mention of his life was obliterated from his country's history. His story echoes Czechoslovakia's struggle for freedom. It gained independence in 1918 only to lose it to Hitler's invading army. In 1945 the exiled government was restored but was overthrown three years later by the Communists.
