This fast paced and chilling story of the Chernobyl disaster, pieced together from eyewitness accounts and historic film footage, shows a cover up of epic proportions. April 26, 1986 marked the day of no return for the residents of Pripyat, just north of Kiev. It was here that Units 3 and 4 of the nuclear reactor of Chernobyl exploded, spewing radiation as far as Scandinavia and Japan. It was here that the dangers were kept from the residents, who witnessed "outsiders in strange suits" with geiger counters come to "clean up" the plant. It was days before the government decided to evacuate the population, telling the residents they would return shortly. Pripyat is still uninhabitable. This was the biggest disaster of the industrial age. More radiation was unleashed than at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Vegetation, cattle, milk, and even firewood was, and continues to be, contaminated all over Belorus and Russia. A whole generation is growing up surrounded by sickness and death. As the spectre of failing nuclear reactors looms large, especially in the former Soviet Union, this film will forever be a chilling reminder of the potential for disaster. High School College Adult

This disturbing film reveals for the first time the true depths of the tragedy at Chernobyl through exclusive archival film and eyewitness accounts. It is a story of deception and cover-up on a grand scale. The true legacy of the disaster can be seen on the children's wards of hospitals. Total hair loss is one of the more visible signs. Sadly for the children, the number of cancer diagnoses is growing alarmingly. We learn that thousands of men from all over the Soviet Union were dragged from the streets and drafted for the clean-up operation. Those working in the area of highest radioactivity received, in a single 90-second-shift, the maximum dosage of radiation allotted for a whole lifetime. It is believed that half of these men have died. Ordinary people were placed in danger through lack of information, while officials quickly evacuated their own families. It is estimated that 280,000 people worldwide will contract cancer because of the disaster. College Adult

Cyborg technology is a revolutionary development in rehabilitation medicine. It allows the brain and nervous system to manipulate specially engineered devices that help people regain the use of impaired body function. Once a dream of science fiction, this revolutionary technology is now becoming a reality. Getting the most attention is "neuro-engineering," which enables messages from the brain to be transmitted to machines. Cochlear implants for the deaf have been developed for children, and even for adults who have lived in the deaf culture all their lives. Prosthetic arms can now replace lost limbs and artificial eyes can help the blind. We meet a man from Tennessee who lost his arms but can now perform activities using his bionic arms. A blind man wears glasses that are connected to a computer which he wears on his waist, allowing him to see the shapes of objects. Directly connected to the brain, these prosthetics and devices are truly life-enhancing. Deep brain stimulation can help stop the violent shaking of victims of Parkinson's Disease. One of neuro-engineering's future goals is to control emotions and feelings. It is already being used to treat brain disorders such as pathological depression. We hear from two professors from the State University of New York and Duke University who discuss their cutting-edge research. A closed-captioned version is available. Please specify when ordering. On April 20th, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded off the Gulf of Mexico, killing eleven BP workers and spewing 200 million barrels of oil into the ocean. DIRTY ENERGY brings to light the personal stories of the Louisiana fishermen and local residents directly impacted by the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history. Filmmaker Bryan D. Hopkins gains intimate access to the lives and homes of these people, as they struggle to rebuild their lives and contend with emerging health crises related to the toxic dispersants used to clean up the spill. DIRTY ENERGY paints a poignant portrait of the human cost of the calamity, and the systematic failure by BP and the U.S. Government to effectively and transparently manage the environmental impact.

The George Washington Bridge spanning the Hudson River between New York and New Jersey is often called the most beautiful bridge in the world. Such a bridge had been envisioned ever since the Brooklyn Bridge was built in the 1890's but the execution of such a large span had to wait for more than a quarter of a century, until 1931. The film tells the story of the building of the bridge, which is also the story of the brilliant engineer, Othmar Amman, who became obsessed with this grandiose plan. For two years he had no income while he worked on its design and solicited politicians for support. New Yorkers were absorbed watching its construction and even participated in its naming through a poll. Appearing in this lively film is Kathleen Hulser of the New-York Historical Society who puts the construction of the bridge into the historical perspective of New York City at the beginning of the 20th century. Archival footage shows a city that is teeming with energy as bridges, tunnels and tall buildings are being built at a rate not seen before in a modern city. It was a great time in the history of engineering when being an engineer was like being a rocket scientist today. Dan Rastorfer, author of 6 Bridges and Christian Meyer, Columbia University School of Engineering, describe the technical challenges of building this magnificent suspension bridge. Through the eyes of an anthropologist this beautifully produced film explores the rich culture of rice, still the basis of survival for most people throughout the world. In the central Philippines lies a village where its indigenous people have lived among their rice terraces for over 2,000 years. If placed end to end, the rice terraces would circle nearly half the globe. In Bali, the Subak water temples foster a unique blend of technological efficiency and religious ritual that together create a perfect ecological balance. A growing problem, however, is that the world will soon run short of the free land required to grow enough rice to meet demand. To address this issue, scientists at the International Rice Research Institute are developing rice grains with improved nutritional value. The most successful strain is Golden Rice, called the "Rosetta Stone" of genetically modified crops. This new strain has triggered an ongoing fight between the scientists and the farmers. The scientists, here labelled "The New Gods of Rice," claim that the genetically engineered rice will eliminate disease and poverty. The farmers, in turn, fear the influence of a monopoly owned by biotech companies they worry are looking to drive them out of business. In Thailand, this battle has already begun with the companies patenting their own potent grains, a practice which may change the nature of rice forever.
