Using mapping, GPS systems, and stuffed animals, research in Tasmania showed that humans needed to modify their driving behavior because of a large loss of animal life on the roadways. Experiment results demonstrated the correlation between the distance an animal was detected on the roadway, and the animal's fur brightness, rather than its size. The Department of Traffic and Infrastructure, to increase awareness of the issue and to modify driving behavior, is considering the development of a sign with a built-in, flashing yellow light, and making available a map of the road kill hotspots downloadable to GPS.
