18 Ius Soli (the right of soil) is a 2012 award-winning grassroots Italian documentary about the issues of the citizenship for 1,000,000 of kids born in Italy. Officially selected at Black Berlin International Cinema. This documentary “examines” the law that denies citizenship to young people born in Italy of immigrant parents, because they have no Italian blood. It follows 18 stories of girls and boys born and raised in Italy whose parents are originally from African, Asian, and South American countries who moved to and have long-lived in different areas of Italy. They are children of immigrants: go to school in Italy, speak the language and dialects, have never even been to the countries that their parents are from, nor do they speak their parents’ language. Yet they are not recognized Italian citizens. To obtain the Italian citizenship, they have to go through a lengthy and complicated application process and can only do so after they’ve turned 18 years old – a process that doesn’t always end positively for the applicant, resulting in serious and unavoidable problems of social inclusion and identity. There are presently 1,000,000 of young people who were born in Italy, speak Italian fluently, have studied in Italian schools and have lived in Italy all their lives, yet, they are not entitles to Italian citizenship. It is a reality lived by Italian soccer champion Mario Balotelli and countless others.

Up to 2,000 migrants have died this year, including the estimated 800 who perished last week when a boat capsized and sank. Traffickers have also been taking advantage of the situation by charging exorbitant fees. Mamie and Shiku are two young African girls. Almost adults. One is 17 years old, the other is 13. These two minor refugees who arrived in England to get a better life become friends. But soon, administrative and police issues separate them. Mamie becomes a clandestine while Shiku's foster family makes her a maid. The story tells how Mamie's courage will maybe allow them to have a future. It is a film about friendship and fear provoked by the discovery of a new world, a new language and new habits. What makes them adults has less to do with their age than with their stories.
Mamie et Shiku, deux jeunes Africaines. Presque adultes. L’une a 17 ans, l’autre 13. Ces deux réfugiées mineures, arrivées en Angleterre pour trouver une vie meilleure, se lient d’amitié. Mais bientôt, les déboires administratifs et policiers vont les séparer . Mamie devient clandestine tandis que la famille d’accueil de Shiku en fait une bonne à tout faire. Le film raconte alors comment le courage de Mamie leur permettra peut-être d’avoir un avenir.Un film sur l’amitié et sur la terreur liée à la découverte d’un nouveau monde, dont on ignore tout, langue et mœurs. C’est moins leur âge que leur histoire qui en fait des adultes.

Transformed into a fortress, Australia is blocking clandestine refugees in the over-crowded and unsanitary camps of Nauru and Manus. What Europe is currently trying to implement with Turkey, Australia has been practicing since 2012. Their radical policy sets out to intercept all clandestine immigrants before they reach the Australian coast. Once intercepted, immigrants are transferred to the island of Nauru and Manus, off the coast of Papua New Guinea. Today, nearly 1,500 people are being detained there - well out of sight of Australian public opinion – for having attempted to reach Australia by boat to seek refugee status. The information that filters through from the camps is indicative of a catastrophic situation, and features violence inflicted by wardens, suicide attempts and riots. In Australia, an increasing number of voices are speaking out against an inordinately expensive policy. The private company that manages the offshore transit camps costs over a billion dollars.
