While Kiribati’s President Anote Tong races to find a way to protect his nation’s people and maintain their dignity, many Kiribati are already seeking safe harbour overseas. Set against the backdrop of international climate and human rights negotiations, Anote’s struggle to save his nation is intertwined with the extraordinary fate of Tiemeri, a young mother of six, who fights to migrate her family to New Zealand. At stake is the survival of Tiemeri’s family, the Kiribati people, and 4,000 years of Kiribati culture.

It places U.S.-Cuban relations within the context of history, dating back to the Spanish-American War in 1898. The documentary goes on to paint a canvas of everyday Cuban life. It contrasts the successes of Cuba - medical care, education and housing - with the often repressive political measures implemented by the Castro government. We hear from Cuban artists, State Department officials, exiled writers, and Fidel Castro himself. We visit the Psychiatric Hospital, the Women's Prison, and a library to see what books are available. This film does full justice to its complex subject. It is neither a rationale for Communist Cuba nor a political tool for Cuban exiles. It will interest audiences of all political persuasions. Since 1994 when the U.S. instituted Operation Gatekeeper, an average of one person a day has died crossing into the U.S. The policy has been condemned by the UN Commissioner of Human Rights, Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International. This poignant film puts a human face on a tragedy that occurs daily. First we visit a small village in Oaxaca where more than half the men have emigrated to the United States to send money home. From here we follow the story of one young woman who made the journey to follow her husband, but died of dehydration in the desert. Then the film goes to Tijuana where thousands of people have desperately attempted the crossing, only to be thrown back. We learn of the hardships imposed by heat and thirst and abusive border guards. Finally, we hear first hand from a border guard, a human rights activist, and a citizen who actually goes into the desert each weekend to provide water for the fugitives. This is a memorable portrait of people who risk everything to come to "the land of plenty" --- and often lose this gamble. College Adult

It is the engaging portrait of Emil Synek, the filmmaker's grandfather, who was a revered playwright, journalist and politician in Czechoslovakia during the era of the Second World War and the Communist takeover. When he was filmed, Emil Synek in his eighties, lived in exile in Paris with his constant companion, a poodle Fifi. Emil's life was shaped by the politics of Europe. When the Nazis invaded his country he fled to London, where he joined the exiled government of Eduard Benes. In post-war Czechoslovakia he served as a diplomat until the Communist takeover of 1948 forced him and his family to flee again to the West. All his works and any mention of his life was obliterated from his country's history. His story echoes Czechoslovakia's struggle for freedom. It gained independence in 1918 only to lose it to Hitler's invading army. In 1945 the exiled government was restored but was overthrown three years later by the Communists. When the Cold War ended, the generations that lived through it were relieved to finally vanquish the specter of a mushroom cloud from their minds. But today, thousands of nuclear weapons in the United States and Russia remain on high-alert, still poised to destroy the planet.
In Japan, atomic bomb survivors struggle with nightmarish memories and negative health effects; atomic veterans, down-winders, and atomic workers around the globe also continue to suffer from the effects of radiation exposure. The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 may have temporarily damaged the soul of Japan, but has anyone ever taken an account of what the Bomb has done, and continues to do, to the soul of the country that dropped it? How might we alter the soul of a nation in order to truly live without the threat of total destruction?
In a globe-trotting journey through various perspectives on nuclear weapons, filmmaker Bud Ryan takes us from the Peace Museums of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, to the "Nuclear Science" museums of the United States; to the place that birthed the atomic bomb, (and cares for it still) the state of New Mexico, where Ryan now lives.
Featuring former U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz, authors Gar Alperovitz and Jonathan Schell, Japanese bomb survivors, and many others, THE FORGOTTEN BOMB explores our pre-conceptions about nuclear weapons and their history, investigates how they inform our sense of identity and discovers what the Bomber can learn from the Bombed.

In this film we meet some of these creative & inventive people and gain an amazing insight into how they have overcome many hardships. Cuba is a world leader in affordable health care and many of their medical inventions have been adopted worldwide. We meet the doctors, the inventors of vaccines & the recipients of free health care. Despite the lack of materials, their artists and designers are finding ways of creating amazing new stuff and gaining international recognition. We meet some of these artists and tap into their eternal optimism. With little access to the internet, clandestine publications have been created to let the population know about the latest news, music and movies – all distributed on hard-drives around the island nation. We meet the man who created "The Package" – the weekly "underground publication" that informs most Cubans of the latest news. And despite turning out some of the best baseball players in the world, from a young age Cubans are unable to play with a real baseball as they either can’t afford one or it’s not available. We meet the little leaguers and a teenager on the verge of stardom. Despite all of these issues, Cuba is changing, opening, reinventing itself.

"Warring Factions" focuses on half Iranian Muslim American's journey to Iran to find break dancers and bridge the rift between the US and Iran with hip hop and traditional Persian martial arts. During this journey, he explores the cultural and political divide between America and Iran from his personal perspective. The documentary begins in the US and soon moves to Iran, where he trains in an authentic Zurkhaneh gym, spends time with family, interviews Tehran citizens, visits local sites, and connects with other Iranian youth who share his passion for the "b-boy" breakdancing subculture. Upon his return home to Arizona, he is detained by Homeland Security, who confiscate his film, laptop and interrogate him about his activities in Iran. The ironic conclusion illustrates the Iranian-American dilemma, who are often caught in the middle of a ceaseless feud between "warring factions."
