The film follows her remarkable journey of transformation and discovery as she returns to Guatemala in search of her heritage and ultimately joins efforts to bring the perpetrators of the massacre to justice and to promote peace and reconciliation in her native country.Dominga Sic Ruiz was nine years old when, during the bloody Guatemalan civil war, she escaped while paramilitary and army forces murdered her mother and 76 other women and 107 children in the Maya village of Rio Negro. She was eventually adopted and grew up in small-town America, where she became a "normal" teenager named Denese and later married. She buried her past so deeply it became transformed in adulthood into doubts and nightmares, until events brought her to face the truth.Beautifully photographed in Iowa and amid the stunning landscapes of the Guatemalan highlands, the film follows her emotional reconnection with lost relatives, with a rich indigenous culture, and with the violent history in which her beloved adopted country -- the United States -- played a sinister role. In Uganda, gender violence is a serious, hidden problem as a means of solving domestic disputes, jealousy feuds, business, and political differences. Knives, guns, and physical attacks are the most commonly used weapons, but the most horrific weapon is acid. A hired killer purchases acid for less than {dollar}1.00 and will throw a bottle of acid onto a person’s face and body with the intent of disfiguring and disabling the victim forever. Reported acid attack victims in Uganda number at around five hundred, though thousands are undocumented and remain hidden in their villages outside of public view. Twelve acid attack survivors refused to remain hidden and isolated. Through the encouragement of Hanifa and Ritah, both acid attack survivors, they all met for the first time on June 25, 2014, in a small village in Uganda. This was the first time they removed their scarves, veils, and masks in public and shared their stories of survival and hopes for the future. The film "Facing the Future" captured this momentous day as each survivor bravely faced the camera to tell their story. They talked about their former lives, recalled their brutal attacks, and how they survived the painful journey back to recovery. They also spoke about the reasons behind such brutal attacks. Most of all, the film captures the survivors’ dreams and hopes for their future, and shows their strength and desire to regain their dignity and human rights.

This intensely personal film traces the filmmaker’s search for identity within the culture of her Armenian parents and in the context of the larger multicultural society in which she lives. Is it her responsibility to carry on the traditions of her forbears who bear the scars of the Genocide of 1915? Through her story one realizes how the legacy of history has impacted on a people. Those Armenians who survived the catastrophic persecution by the Ottoman Turks became part of a diaspora. The Artinians settled in Canada and fiercely maintained their identity as Armenians. Araz’ father started an Armenian school in Montreal, the Armenian language was spoken at home, and the conscience of the people demanded that the Turks acknowledge the brutality with which they killed one and a half million Armenians and drove out an equal number. When Araz journeys to Eastern Turkey to search for evidence of her people’s tragic history she finds that the guide books never mention the Armenians who once lived there.The Turks have been educated to minimize and explain away the Genocide. The Genocide in Me weaves together archival footage and moving interviews with elderly survivors to create a deeply felt portrayal of a holocaust that needs universal recognition. Through the eyes of an anthropologist this beautifully produced film explores the rich culture of rice, still the basis of survival for most people throughout the world. In the central Philippines lies a village where its indigenous people have lived among their rice terraces for over 2,000 years. If placed end to end, the rice terraces would circle nearly half the globe. In Bali, the Subak water temples foster a unique blend of technological efficiency and religious ritual that together create a perfect ecological balance. A growing problem, however, is that the world will soon run short of the free land required to grow enough rice to meet demand. To address this issue, scientists at the International Rice Research Institute are developing rice grains with improved nutritional value. The most successful strain is Golden Rice, called the "Rosetta Stone" of genetically modified crops. This new strain has triggered an ongoing fight between the scientists and the farmers. The scientists, here labelled "The New Gods of Rice," claim that the genetically engineered rice will eliminate disease and poverty. The farmers, in turn, fear the influence of a monopoly owned by biotech companies they worry are looking to drive them out of business. In Thailand, this battle has already begun with the companies patenting their own potent grains, a practice which may change the nature of rice forever.

But what happens when sociologists and anthropologists are embedded in the conflict with military troops, even with a death threat? What happens when academics go to war, armed with their gas masks and bulletproof vests?
Alors qu’elle occupe l’Irak et l’Afghanistan, l’armée américaine se demande pourquoi « elle est tant haïe ». Face à ce problème, le Pentagone adopte une stratégie nouvelle d’ouverture vers « le terrain humain » local - à savoir les populations iraquiennes et afghanes - pour gagner leur confiance et ouvrir le dialogue.

This profound ethnographic documentary explores the myriad of ways in which centuries-old indigenous knowledge is rapidly vanishing throughout the world. The film focuses on the southern Mexican village of Talea, Oaxaca. For half a century, the Zapotec people of this region have experienced rapid modernization: The creation of a road linking the village to cities, the arrival of electricity, and the introduction of computers and Internet have all transformed the texture of daily life. However, the people of Talea have often experienced progress as a double-edged sword. Farmers are now able to export coffee and other cash crops, but many of their children have migrated to the United States and today, fertile fields lay abandoned. Governance was once a village affair, but state and national government has disrupted and sometimes displaced local political autonomy. Most new buildings in Talea are constructed with imported concrete, not with regional materials. And traditional healing practices are rapidly being displaced by Western biomedicine. By exploring the transformation of agriculture, governance, architecture, and medical practices in the village, filmmaker/anthropologists Laura Nader and Roberto Gonzalez pose a series of provocative questions: Is it possible that 50 years of development has done more to unravel local culture than 500 years of conquest? What are the long-term implications of the knowledge that has been lost? Is there any possibility these processes might be reversed? The film also examines how disappearing indigenous knowledge isn't just a Zapotec problem. It is a global problem, for throughout the world, local knowledge developed over centuries -- a priceless intellectual treasure trove -- is withering away at an alarming rate. Losing Knowledge is both insightful and poignant. It will engage students and engender thought and discussion in a wide range of classes in cultural anthropology, Latin American studies, development issues and economics, and third-World studies. It was produced and directed by Laura Nader (University of California, Berkeley) and Roberto Gonzalez (San Jose State University).
