Adelante showcases an Irish Catholic church on the outskirts of Philadelphia that is attracting the patronage of Mexican immigrants in the area. With a personal glimpse at the lives of the vibrant community members - a remarkable Irish American priest, young Mexican immigrants, and older Irish parishioners - the film shows how churchgoers from various backgrounds have forged meaningful and heartfelt bonds of friendship and understanding. Once moribund, the church has become a place for American parishioners to learn about, accept, and embrace a group of immigrants that breathes new life into the community. The film shares the expectant joy of the newly arrived families as they establish lives in an unfamiliar, often bewildering country that offers opportunities entangled with sometimes painful compromises. At its core, Adelante is a celebration of two groups' growth and an embrace of their evolving community.

The role of African Methodism in the Caribbean and the African continent is approached from the perspective of decolonial theory, presenting South-South narratives of liberation in the voices of its own protagonistAs the first Dominican-Haitian documentary co-production, this film retraces the liberation legacy of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME) in the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Namibia and the United States, its place of origin. These common narratives on struggles against enslavement and apartheid are told in three different languages (English, French, Spanish) in the voices of 19 interviewees. The AME Mother Bethel Church was founded by Bishop Richard Allen in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1794, as the first protestant church ministered exclusively by former enslaved people. It became a legally incorporated denomination in 1816. Upon the request of the Haitian government, The AME sent 6,000 individuals to the island of Saint-Domingue between 1824-1826, two decades after this first Black Republic in the world came into being. The Haitian Revolution is an integral part of the history of the AME in the island and it is also crucial to note that Richard Allen was deeply involved in the logistics of this immigration, the most important one of the XIX Century in Dominican history.

In this moving and at times disturbing film, Pete travels throughout the Middle East encountering Whirling Dervishes, folk religion of the Alevis and more. Peter Owen Jones explores the roots of religious conflict in the Middle East. His month-long journey starts in Jerusalem with sites sacred to three of the world’s biggest religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. He arrives on Good Friday and meets Christian pilgrims retracing Christ’s final steps to Golgotha. Over the Jewish festival of Purim he questions Zionist settlers and the father of a Palestinian suicide bomber about the causes of intolerance and the effects of the violence. He travels to Syria to explore Islam and the mystical Sufi tradition of the Whirling Derivishes. In Turkey Pete discovers the older and much less well known folk religion of the Alevis. Venturing across the border into Iraq, he tracks down the ancient and obscure group known as the Yazidis at their temple in the mountains of the north. His journey is full of uncomfortable revelations about the nature of religious intolerance, but ends with a redemptive message of peace.

Pete meets a Candomble priestess at her house on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro and takes a mind-expanding hallucinogen with a New Age community in the forests of Brazil. In Latin America, Pete smokes cigars with ‘Mother Death’ in Mexico, ventures deep into a Bolivian mine to meet a terrifying god of the underworld, and takes a natural hallucinogen with a New Age community in the forests of Brazil. He also discovers that the centuries-old dominance of the Catholic Church is being challenged by a huge explosion of new religions and the re-emergence of dormant practices from the past. But his search to understand the diverse spiritualities of the New World proves to be a testing experience. Pete encounters the radical methods of an influential Pentecostal preacher in one of Rio de Janeiro’s most notorious prisons, and has to hold his nerve when the minister tries to exorcise Pete’s addiction to nicotine. In Brasilia, Pete witnesses the space-age pageantry of a UFO-worshipping community, where a medium reading gets out of control and Pete has to deal with a dark and frightening presence from the spirit world.

The war in El Salvador was the most cruel and bloody Latin America has ever seen. During that time of turmoil Latin American bishops created the famous preferential option for the poor, demanding justice, food and education in the name of the gospel. As campesinos, students, and reformists defied the military government, the Jesuits, as spokesmen of the poor, were ordered to leave the country. The Jesuits refused to leave, and many clergy were murdered. Using interviews and old footage, the film follows the civil war and the role of the Church in it. In 1977, after the murder of Father Rutilio Grande, the Archbishop Oscar Romero took a strong anti government position, broadcasting sermons over Radio Luz demanding that the government stop the repression. He could not understand why he was thought to be a follower of Karl Marx, when he knew "he followed only Jesus Christ." Father Romero was killed by a single shot while delivering a sermon. Today, he is looked upon as a saint in El Salvador. An inspiring film about people of faith who stood up against injustice. College Adult
