This lucid series tells the stories of Nietzsche, Heidegger and Sartre, three men who spent their lives in search of a philosophy that would make sense of this bewildering new world. When the twentieth century began, few would have challenged the idea that scientific advances and material progress would make the world a better place. Old ways of thinking were swept aside – religious belief included – and mankind was left poorly equipped to deal with that other phenomenon of the twentieth century: carnage and genocide on a scale never before seen. This series tells the stories of three men who spent their lives in search of a philosophy that would make sense of this bewildering new world. Using extensive extracts form their works, archive material, commentary by experts, and dramatic new footage, each film in the trilogy offers a rich narrative portrait of the men and their philosophies. Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) Nietzsche proclaimed, “God is dead”, but far less exultantly than is generally believed. For all his apparent nihilism, Nietzsche was troubled by the abyss of non-belief yawning before him. Now, at the end of the millenium, his prescience is felt more actutely than ever. Today he takes his place alongside Marx and Freud as one of the three great influences on contemporary European culture life. The film presents the remarkable story of how Nietzsche transformed his own life of physical weakness and emotional pain into an exuberant philosophy of supreme individual strength. Using new evidence, it demonstrates how it was his sister’s editing and repackaging of his writings that led to his concepts of “the will to power” and “the Superman” becoming the intellectual cornerstones of the Third Reich. Directed by Simon Chu. Martin Heidegger (1889-1976)Martin Heidegger’s monumental Being and Time was published in 1927, catapulting him into the first ranks of the philosophical giants and gaining him an international reputation. By the 1930s, he had become ensnared in the rise of Nazism. This film traces his progress, from the humblest of beginnings, through the early stages of his brilliant academic career, to his disastrous embroilment in the rise of the Third Reich and beyond. It lays bare the full extent of his Nazi involvement and examines how he became “rehabilitated” (at least in the eyes of powerful admirers such as Jean Paul Satre) during the post-war era. A careful exposition of Heidegger’s philosophy maps the major milestones along his intellectual path so that the roots of his actions during the 1930s can be found in the dark and forbidding forest of his thought. Directed by Jeff Morgan Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980)This film follows Sartre’s story as he emerged from war to become the leading philosopher of Existentialism and the centre of intellectual and artistic life in Paris after the Liberation. His fiction and plays made him the most widely-read philosopher of our century; their brilliant analysis of the psychology of the era connected philosophy to everyday life for the first time. He crystalized the mood of the times and became a rallying point for youth and a touchstone for reaction to world events. The film places Sartre and his ideas against the pivotal background of the Second World War and the years immediately following, showing how his ideas were a response to, and then shaped, the horror and moral disorientation, the shame of defeat and fear for the future during the German occupation of France.
