From sacrifices in honour of Voodoo spirits in the west to a rock-hewn church in the highlands of northern Ethiopia, Pete explores the spiritual traditions of Africa. In a gruelling journey through the continent where all human life began, Pete hopes to get a glimpse of Man’s first experience of the divine. Setting off to explore the spiritual traditions of Africa, he starts with the ancient practice of Voodoo in Benin. Confronted by ritual practices that contradict his own, deeply held religious convictions, he is forced to decide whether he should even take part. Next stop is Botswana, to meet the San Bushmen, inheritors of the earliest religious faith on Earth. In South Africa, Pete discovers surprising new developments in religious belief when he meets the members of the 12th Apostolic Church, and is stunned to find Afrikaners who believe the world is about to come to an end. In Ethiopia, he finds a group of one of the world’s youngest religions – Rastafarians – who have set up a Utopian community in this harsh and unforgiving land. His journey reaches its emotional conclusion in the highlands of northern Ethiopia, where members of Africa’s oldest Christian church have gathered in an ancient, rock-hewn church to pray, as they have prayed for almost 2,000 years.

In this moving and at times disturbing film, Pete travels throughout the Middle East encountering Whirling Dervishes, folk religion of the Alevis and more. Peter Owen Jones explores the roots of religious conflict in the Middle East. His month-long journey starts in Jerusalem with sites sacred to three of the world’s biggest religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. He arrives on Good Friday and meets Christian pilgrims retracing Christ’s final steps to Golgotha. Over the Jewish festival of Purim he questions Zionist settlers and the father of a Palestinian suicide bomber about the causes of intolerance and the effects of the violence. He travels to Syria to explore Islam and the mystical Sufi tradition of the Whirling Derivishes. In Turkey Pete discovers the older and much less well known folk religion of the Alevis. Venturing across the border into Iraq, he tracks down the ancient and obscure group known as the Yazidis at their temple in the mountains of the north. His journey is full of uncomfortable revelations about the nature of religious intolerance, but ends with a redemptive message of peace.

Pete is in the most religiously diverse country in the world, the USA. He discovers a dangerous side to the Bible Belt when he gets too close to the serpent-handlers in the Appalachian mountains, before taking his seat at a table-tipping séance. He continues to challenge his own faith when he comes face to face with a miracle-working evangelist and a boy preacher. He then witnesses gay rites in California. In Utah, he visits the Holy city of Mormonism and ventures into the wilderness to seek out religious outlaws who take many wives. Pete goes native in a traditional Navajo sweat lodge and visits a sect where mummification is alive and well. His journey reaches an explosive climax in Nevada, when he joins 50,000 revellers to witness the ceremonial burning of a man.
