Documentary on the astoundingly energetic national dance company of Sierra Leone, on Africa’s west coast. In 1964 they won the international dance competition at the New York Worlds Fair with their display of folkloric dances. Several years later they came back on tour and taped this sampling of their repertory, which reflects the cultural diversity and tribal traditions of the country. Commentary by dance authority Faubion Bowers takes the viewer through a variety of dances, and an interview with the company’s director, who explains that thirteen different tribal and language groups are represented in this group. Dances shown here -- from several different tribal traditions --include celebrating the harvest, welcoming a visitor, acknowledging a benevolent demon, announcing happiness, and marking an important occasion. The performances feature traditional folkloric instruments and costumes. 1972.

Recorded live from the Herkulessaal Munich, Sir Colin Davis conducts the Bayerischer Rundfunk Symphony Orchestra, with soloist Gidon Kremer, in a performance of Alban Berg‘s elegiac Violin Concerto. Alban Berg completed this concerto for violin and orchestra in 1935, impelled by the news of the death of Manon Gropius, the beautiful eighteen-year-old daughter of Mahler‘s widow by her second marriage, to the architect Walter Gropius. He dedicated it “to the memory of an angel”. THE SECRET LIFE OF ALBAN BERG (Documentary) Alban Berg (1885-1935) lived in the mainstream of well-to-do Austrian society. His marriage to the beautiful Hélène was thought to be made in heaven. But how can this doyen of Viennese respectability be reconciled with the composer who wrote the dark operas Wozzeck and Lulu? In this multi-layered film, director Krišs Rusmanis explores the private world behind the composer’s public image and reveals the double life Berg led, despite his moving protestations of fidelity and devotion to his wife. While condemning the moral hypocrisy of society in Lulu, he concealed the existence of his illegitimate daughter, Albine, continued more than one clandestine love affair and frequented the sleazy haunts that flourished in Vienna. This multi-layered film explores Berg‘s double life. Soprano Kristine Ciesinki, who features in specially-staged extracts from Lulu and Wozzeck, travels to Vienna, Prague, the USA and Germany to track down important archive documents and people who can recall the composer‘s presence in their lives.

"Homecoming (Celebrating 20 Years of Dance at P.S. 122 - 1980-2000)” (2004) is a dance, documentary film by Charles Dennis. “Homecoming” chronicles the origins and evolution of Performance Space 122 in New York City, one of this country's most active presenters of new dance and performance art and profiles ten leading choreographers, Ron Brown, Ann Carlson, Yoshiko Chuma, Dancenoise, Mark Dendy, Ishmael Houston-Jones, Jennifer Monson, Charles Moulton, Sally Silvers and Doug Varone, whose careers were launched at P.S. 122. The film was shot in 2000 on the occasion of P.S. 122's 20th season. To honor that achievement Charles Dennis, one of the co-founders of the space, invited the ten choreographers to return for a special taping of selected dances from their repertories. Combining new and archival performance clips, interviews with the artists, commentary by Deborah Jowitt of the Village Voice, Jennifer Dunning of The New York Times, Joseph Melillo the Executive Producer of the Brooklyn Academy of Music, former P.S 122 Artistic Director Mark Russell and P.S. 122 co-founders Charles Moulton, Tim Miller and Charles Dennis the film illuminates a portrait of a fertile dance scene that was instrumental in expanding the boundaries of contemporary dance and performance. Performance photography by Dona Ann McAdams and original music by John Zorn are also featured in the film.

On this DVD Franco is very much himself. He sings to the audience as he sang to me in his living room--with the same gestures and mannerisms. And they love it! He flings himself into the encores with wild abandon. Gives spinal chills. The most personality of any Corelli DVD. Corelli's Rubato: Listen to Corelli play with the tempo in Ernesto De Curtis's "Tu ca nun chiagne." He introduces ritards and accelerations. Or listen to F. Paolo Tosti's "A Vucchella," where Corelli twice eases back into tempo after (unduly) long fermatas. Yet he told me, "I didn't do rubato for fear of being squadrato [not with the conductor's beat]." In this concert he is squadrato in "O paradiso," on the word "paradiso." The reality may have been that he was willing to sing with flexibility of tempo when with piano accompaniment, as in the De Curtis and Tosti songs, in which he sings with piano after the orchestra has left the stage. His Bobbing Larynx and Dropped Jaw: Voice teacher Giovanni Battista Lamperti maintained, in Vocal Wisdom: The Maxims of Giovanni Battista Lamperti by William Earl Brown, "Though the larynx need not be held muscularly fixed in one position, for either upper or lower register, it should remain quiescent throughout a song," also that a singer should open his mouth "as wide as finger thickness." Corelli adopted an unrelated approach. In accordance with his modification of Melocchi's method, in soft passages his larynx "floated" up, in loud passages down. More, by 1971, Corelli had come to sing with his mouth wide open and jaw dropped to the maximum, on high notes, in particular--as is apparent in this concert. His Scatto: At the end of "Un dì all'azzurro spazio" and the end of "Tu ca nun chiagne" Franco sings with scatto (punch), which is a reason he is so exciting.--Stefan Zucker. DVD Bonuses: Corelli in two radio interviews with Stefan Zucker, 5 hrs., 8 mins., total. The first also includes Jerome Hines and Dodi Protero.
