The story of NATO -- The North Atlantic Treaty Organization. As shown in this episode, the United States as a founding member of this vital international body, has demonstrated to the world the importance we place on the closest association between the members of the Atlantic community. Throughout history, nations have sought through treaties and alliances with other nations, to maintain their security and remain free from attack. But not until the twentieth century did the concept of national security become worldwide in its scope. World Wars I and II and the Korean War proved beyond any doubt that when one free nation anywhere is threatened by aggression, the safety of all free nations is ultimately at stake. Dramatically presented on film, the United States is shown in its strategic role as leader in the free world and its alliance with other nations dedicated to the preservation of peace and the welfare of mankind.

Filmed in Canada by U.S. Army Signal Corps cameramen, this film had its world premiere on October 28 at 9:30 P.M. over the coast-to-coast facilities of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Tracing the history of the Canadian Army from the middle of the 18th century to present, the film examines the historic relations of Canada and the United States. The fruitfulness of Canadian-American solidarity is nowhere more evident than in the shoulder-to-shoulder fighting shared by Canadian and American soldiers on the battlefields of Europe and Korea. Evident throughout the story is the vigorous neighborly spirit which has contributed so mightily to the strength of Canada and the United States alike. Canada's modern Army embodies a living tradition begun long ago and nourished by the many soldiers who contributed service and sacrifice, who led its regiments and filled its ranks on the battlegrounds of the world.

General George S. Patton was a walking talking fighting machine whose personality was bigger and noisier than one of his Sherman tanks. He was tough. He was vain. He was brilliant. And in a world gone mad with war he was our greatest field commander. His slashing armored columns dismembered the panzers of Hitler's "Thousand Year Reich" with matchless thunder and dash. Passionate and arrogant he slapped soldiers and cried over them; he was vilified and deified. But when it came time for the bloody business of war George Patton had no peers. This revealing profile takes a look at the complex personality of the man who struck fear into Nazi generals and left Allied superiors questioning his sanity. March into battle with George S. Patton a man who lived and died a warrior.

Part of the Biography television series from A&E, this documentary reviews the career and personal life of New Deal PresidentFranklin D. Roosevelt. Admitted to the New York bar in 1907, he served as a progressive state senator and assistant navy secretary before running unsuccessfully as vice-president on the 1920 Democratic ticket. After a crippling attack of polio in 1921 (he would never again walk without assistance), he resumed his political career, becoming governor of New York and seeming to take on a new sense of purpose. With the country in a deep depression, he easily defeated Herbert Hoover in 1932. As president, he moved decisively and set the pattern for the modern liberal Democratic Party with a social and economic program called the "New Deal." An array of agencies and departments were designed to stimulate the economy, put people to work, and simply to create hope. Reelected by a landslide in 1936, he won unprecedented third and fourth terms in 1940 and 1944. Having maintained neutrality in the face of European hostilities his administration began supplying arms to the allies by 1940 and then led the nation into World War II after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Having seen the nation through the war, Roosevelt died less than four weeks before the German surrender.

This is the epic story of the monumental soldier and statesman who-perhaps more than anybody else-shaped the world we live in today. He is the only career soldier ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize. His military genius led the Allies to victory in World War II, and his far-flung vision helped engineer the peace that followed. George C. Marshall may well be the most influential figure of the century. He was so vital to America's effort in World War II that FDR said, 'I could not sleep if I did not know that George Marshall was in Washington.' Churchill called him 'the true organizer of victory.' Through extensive expert interviews, rare archival footage and contemporary accounts, the life and career of this monumental figure come to life. In a rare interview, Colin Powell talks about Marshall's brilliance in preparing America for war and laying out the grand strategy. See footage of Marshall receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for his Plan for European Recovery better known as the Marshall Plan. And discover why both FDR and Eisenhower agreed that Marshall would have been the greatest president America had ever seen.

This edition of Biography, the long running documentary series from A&E, explores the life of General and President Dwight D. Eisenhower. From 1935-39 Eisenhower was an assistant to Gen. Douglas MacArthur in the Philippines. As World War II progressed, he continued to rise in rank and responsibilities and was assigned to command the allied forces during their invasions of North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. His talent for both strategic planning and staff coordination led him to be named supreme commander of the allied invasion of Normandy and he directed the campaign from D-Day to the surrender of Germany. By that time he had earned the army's highest rank, a five-star general. After commanding the U.S. occupation forces in Germany, he returned to the U.S.A. to serve as army chief of staff before retiring from active duty. The Republicans drafted him as their presidential candidate in 1952. He won by a landslide over Adlai Stevenson and did the same in 1956 becoming the nations 34th president. During his time in office he established a truce in the Korean War in 1953. In 1956 he sent troops to restore order in racially troubled Little Rock, Arkansas.
