Description
The success of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) trade talks held in Cancun, Mexico in September 2003, was very important. It could have reshaped the world's trading system by reducing barriers to trade. Such reshaping would have raised global incomes by $2.8 trillion over the next decade. But hopes were dashed as Cancun fizzled out due to the deep differences between the developed and the developing nations.

China's huge domestic market; investment incentives in high value-added sectors; high research and development expenditure; and a relatively stable political environment are all conducive for foreign investment, attracting investors. Nevertheless, corruption within business and politics remains pervasive in spite of targeted anti-corruption initiatives, and intellectual property protection remains weak. State-owned enterprises enjoy preferential treatment over foreign entities in areas such as credit allocation, taxation and legal protection. In addition to this, the risk of rising global protectionism from trading partners such as the US has the potential to deeply affect China's export volumes, hurting the country's trade balance.

President Xi has asked China to “prepare for Dangerous Storms”, and so the country is working towards greater technological independence, amidst an ongoing semiconductor war with the U.S. China is also working towards greater energy self-sufficiency, ramping up its nuclear energy, and green energy infrastructure projects. In food supply, it is pushing out new technologies such as sea rice, to improve its self-sufficiency. Central bankers are also doubling down on efforts to internationalize the RMB currency, and reduce reliance on the U.S. dollar. What does the quest for self-sufficiency in so many sectors of the economy mean for the country? Prominent thinkers and political scientists share their opinions.
