Part of the Biography television series from A&E, this documentary reviews the career and personal life of New Deal PresidentFranklin D. Roosevelt. Admitted to the New York bar in 1907, he served as a progressive state senator and assistant navy secretary before running unsuccessfully as vice-president on the 1920 Democratic ticket. After a crippling attack of polio in 1921 (he would never again walk without assistance), he resumed his political career, becoming governor of New York and seeming to take on a new sense of purpose. With the country in a deep depression, he easily defeated Herbert Hoover in 1932. As president, he moved decisively and set the pattern for the modern liberal Democratic Party with a social and economic program called the "New Deal." An array of agencies and departments were designed to stimulate the economy, put people to work, and simply to create hope. Reelected by a landslide in 1936, he won unprecedented third and fourth terms in 1940 and 1944. Having maintained neutrality in the face of European hostilities his administration began supplying arms to the allies by 1940 and then led the nation into World War II after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Having seen the nation through the war, Roosevelt died less than four weeks before the German surrender.

This edition of Biography, the long running documentary series from A&E, explores the life of General and President Dwight D. Eisenhower. From 1935-39 Eisenhower was an assistant to Gen. Douglas MacArthur in the Philippines. As World War II progressed, he continued to rise in rank and responsibilities and was assigned to command the allied forces during their invasions of North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. His talent for both strategic planning and staff coordination led him to be named supreme commander of the allied invasion of Normandy and he directed the campaign from D-Day to the surrender of Germany. By that time he had earned the army's highest rank, a five-star general. After commanding the U.S. occupation forces in Germany, he returned to the U.S.A. to serve as army chief of staff before retiring from active duty. The Republicans drafted him as their presidential candidate in 1952. He won by a landslide over Adlai Stevenson and did the same in 1956 becoming the nations 34th president. During his time in office he established a truce in the Korean War in 1953. In 1956 he sent troops to restore order in racially troubled Little Rock, Arkansas.

On September 17, 1960, Sen. John F. Kennedy, the Democratic nominee for president, flew to Greenville for a campaign rally on the campus of East Carolina College. Kennedy’s ECC rally was part of a marathon daylong blitz that continued statewide through Greensboro and Charlotte. The campaign intended to go as far west as Asheville but due to inclement weather concluded with dinner at the governor’s mansion in Raleigh and a rally at Reynolds Coliseum. With photographs as key primary sources, John F. Kennedy’s North Carolina Campaign explores what happened that day, why it happened, and its significance in North Carolina’s political history. While the book focuses on the East Carolina College rally, which was the first of the day, Kennedy’s subsequent rallies ultimately bore statewide and national significance, making it impossible to examine only one stop without contextualizing it in relation to the remainder.

The town of Langley, tagged “Village by the Sea,” is perched on a low bluff near the southern end of Whidbey Island in Puget Sound. Town founder Jacob Anthes first purchased land here at age 15, helped plat the town in 1891, and built a wharf. As new families arrived, First Street filled with businesses and homes, and the town was incorporated in 1913. Fishing resorts sprang up, but when the passenger ferry service shifted from Langley to Clinton, the town languished. During the 1970s, an influx of young artists and hippies arrived with an appreciation of the area’s unspoiled natural setting. Today, Langley offers a quiet, off-the-main-highway lifestyle with seaside beauty and the cultural stimuli of theater, art, and music.
