Filmed in Canada by U.S. Army Signal Corps cameramen, this film had its world premiere on October 28 at 9:30 P.M. over the coast-to-coast facilities of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Tracing the history of the Canadian Army from the middle of the 18th century to present, the film examines the historic relations of Canada and the United States. The fruitfulness of Canadian-American solidarity is nowhere more evident than in the shoulder-to-shoulder fighting shared by Canadian and American soldiers on the battlefields of Europe and Korea. Evident throughout the story is the vigorous neighborly spirit which has contributed so mightily to the strength of Canada and the United States alike. Canada's modern Army embodies a living tradition begun long ago and nourished by the many soldiers who contributed service and sacrifice, who led its regiments and filled its ranks on the battlegrounds of the world.

When the USA exploded two nuclear bombs over Japan in 1945, it was perhaps the largest demonstration of power in the history of civilization. But there was more to follow, for the devastating explosions over Hiroshima and Nagasaki were just the starting point of a desperate arms race between the USA and the Soviet Union - and during the next 40 years, the nuclear stockpiles of the super powers would grow at an alarming rate, leading, on several occasions, to the world being close to a nuclear war. It wasn’t until the end of the cold war that thousands of nuclear bombs were disarmed - and the world could once more breathe easy - at least for a while. Today, the number of countries with atomic weapon arsenals is on the increase ?and alongside the likelihood that terrorist groups could, any day, get their hands on this deadly technology, is greater than ever. The film makes use of significant archival footage to tell the story. Einstein, Oppenheimer, Truman, Stalin, Reagan, and many others are depicted as they grapple with the dilemma posed by nuclear weapons. Commentary by historians such as Prof. Lawrence S. Wittner, University of Wisconsin, and Scotland’s Prof. Gerard De Groot gives the viewer a perspective on past events. Roland Timerbaev, former UN ambassador from Russia, gives an insider’s view of the Soviet Union’s policy during the Cuban missile crisis, as well as Gorbachev’s efforts towards disarmament. Amid Chicago’s North Shore communities is a national landmark—the former U.S. Army Base at Fort Sheridan (1887-1993). Fort Sheridan was created out of the civil and labor unrest following the Chicago Fire of 1871, the great Railway Strike of 1877, and the Haymarket Riot of 1886. These events produced an atmosphere of insecurity, prompting Chicago’s wealthiest businessmen—North Shore residents and members of the Commercial Club of Chicago—to levy their influence with the federal government in establishing an army presence in their backyards. Fort Sheridan is a place rich in the traditions of the U.S. cavalry and artillery, of training camps, and the Women’s Army Corps. This illustrated history explores the many aspects of Fort Sheridan and takes the reader on a journey through military life.

Georgia's past has diverged from the nation's and given the state and its people a distinctive culture and character. Some of the best, and the worst, aspects of American and Southern history can be found in the story of what is arguably the most important state in the South. Yet just as clearly Georgia has not always followed the road traveled by the rest of the nation and the region. Explaining the common and divergent paths that make us who we are is one reason the Georgia Historical Society has collaborated with Buddy Sullivan and Arcadia Publishing to produce Georgia: A State History, the first full-length history of the state produced in nearly a generation. Sullivan's lively account draws upon the vast archival and photographic collections of the Georgia Historical Society to trace the development of Georgia's politics, economy, and society and relates the stories of the people, both great and small, who shaped our destiny. This book opens a window on our rich and sometimes tragic past and reveals to all of us the fascinating complexity of what it means to be a Georgian.

The history of Parkersburg is, essentially, the history of the United States. Founded shortly after America’s independence, Parkersburg grew from a small river town in what was once wilderness to a thriving industrial city to one that is currently redefining itself. Industrial giants, such as Camden and Cabot, made Parkersburg a leader in the oil and gas industry by the early 20th century. The maturing city boasted numerous factories, luxury hotels, upscale stores, and several ornate theaters while also serving as a rail hub. Parkersburg also took pride in education, with architecturally stunning primary and secondary schools and the building of a branch campus of West Virginia University. High school sports contributed to the city’s reputation, with a lengthy list of statewide championships won by local schools.
