STEPS TO SICILY
Final training scenes on African shores as America's various military units rehearse their parts for the dramatic invasion of Sicily.
1--The paratroopers go through all steps leading to their mass jumping from fleets of troop bearing planes.
2--Glider troop trains rehearse their stated roles.
3--Fleets of huge sea-going barges, laden with infantry, plow through the seas to guarded shores. Through barbed wire they hack their way, and clamber up hilly slopes to engage the enemy.
YANKS BATTER ITALY
The U. S. 9th and 12th Air Forces direct terrific aerial bombardments on Italian soil. Blockbusters scatter destruction. Even the near hits in the sea are valuable, since they set off mine fields.
CHURCHILL, A LONDON FREEMAN
In historic ceremony, Mr. Churchill is presented a significant scroll which makes him a Freeman of London. In speech thereafter, he destines Japan to certain doom.
HUMAN KITES
In little Rhode Island they fly the largest kites in the nation. Designer Jalbert demonstrates them, and sends his daughter aloft as a passenger.

F. D. R. GETS UNIVERSITY DEGREE
PHILADELPHIA, PA.--Receiving an honorary L.I.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania at its bicentennial celebration, President Roosevelt says that only dictators fear a free election! He also inspects the Navy Yard here, where construction is being rushed on more warships for our Navy.
WILLKIE HAILED ON WEST COAST
LOS ANGELES, CALIF.--A record crowd of almost 100,000 turns out to see and hear the G.O.P. candidate at the Coliseum, as he continues to blast the New Deal. At the Golden Gate Exposition, 40,000 greet him after a triumphal tour through San Francisco.
NATIONAL GUARD BEGINS YEAR'S TRAINING
FORT DIX, N. J.--Uncle Sam's defense program shifts into high gear, with the arrival at camp of thousands of National Guardsmen, called out to serve a year with the Army. Life is busy for them--"In the Army Now!"
LEGIONNAIRES "TAKE" CITY
BOSTON, MASS.--Colorful scenes as the American Legion, many thousands strong, "captures" the Hub City for its annual convention. Following the dedication of a statue of Paul revere, the Legionnaires assemble at the "Garden" under Commander Kelly.
LARGEST FERRYBOAT LAUNCHED
MANITOWOC, WIS.--20,000 persons see the launching of the "City of Midland," world's biggest ferryboat. The streamlined craft weighs 6,000 tons and is 406 feet long! It will carry hundreds of passengers and autos on Lake Michigan.
HASH BEATS CHALLEDON IN UPSET
NARRAGANSETT, R. I.--Challedon, the odds-on favorite to win the $25,000 "Special," disappoints his followers as he comes in a half-length behind the Greentree Stable entry, in a spectacular finish.
