NEWS HIGHLIGHTS OF 1 9 5 8
Top News Events of the Year! America draws abreast of the USSR in space research, putting its first satellite the Explorer, into Orbit. And sending two rockets some 70,000 miles, the fartherest yet attained - in attempts to reach the moon. The cruise of the Nautilus entered the saga of the sea. The nuclear sub went, submerged, from Hawaii to Britain under the North Pole itself!
A new State was admitted and Alaska celebrated its long awaited acceptance in the Union with jubilation reminiscent of sourdough days!
Vice-President Richard Nixon and Mrs. Nixon toured South America and barely escaped injury as the result of mob violence in an atmosphere feverish with anti-Americanism in Lima and Caracas.
The Man of the Year: General Charles De Gaulle who emerged from the shadows - at the hour of his country's greatest crisis to become leader of the new Fifth Republic - swept to power by overwhelming popular vote.
America won a triumph on the cultural front in the Cold War at the Brussels Fair, with a widely-acclaimed architectural gem of a pavilion in sharp contrast to a looming Soviet monolith.
Russia had the initiative in the global power struggle. Khrushchev's overtures to Egyptian strong-man Gamal Abdel Nasser was followed by the formation of the United Arab Republic plus months of turmoil and crisis in the explosive Middle East. Iraq's King Faisal was slain during uprising. Rebellion-torn Lebanon appealed to America and U.S. Marines went to the rescue to bolster the government. The Middle East crisis subsided as Red China launched a staggering artillery assault on Chiang's off-shore outposts on the Quemoy Islands. Nationalist China, backed by the mighty U.S. 7th Fleet, broke the blockade by barrage and at the year's end pressure shifted to Berlin, as a Soviet ultimatum demanding that the Big 3 surrender the Free City to the Red ruler's of the puppet State of East Germany.
One of the world's greatest proponents for Peace and Freedom - Pope Pius XII died in 1958. His successor Pope John XXIII, was crowned with all the pomp and ceremony of the Church's millenia-old tradition, assuming the Papal Crown at a time of continuing crisis.

1959 IN REVIEW
A year of unprecedented travel, ceremonies and consultations by the great power leaders, with the outstanding highlights being Vice-President Nixon's visit to Russia and debate with Premier Khrushchev, Khrushchev's fabulous, flamboyant tour of America, and President Eisenhower's historic and unprecedented tour of 11 Free World Nations.
The exploration of Space proceeded with notable achievements by both the Soviet and the United States, the Reds reaching the moon for the first time, and giving mankind its first glimpse of the other side, and America making major strides in preparing for man's first actual voyage into space.
In this hemisphere, Cuba's first year under the reign of Fidel Castro and the opening of the Canadian-U.S. St. Lawrence Seaway in joint ceremonies by Ike and Queen Elizabeth topped the news. Hawaii followed Alaska into the Union, with exultant celebrations throughout the Islands to mark the dream fulfilled.
Romance made news, with the same fairy tale theme thrice repeated. Prince Akihito of Japan married a pretty commoner, Mishiko Shoda; multi-millionaire's son Stephen Rockefeller wed a former family maid, Anne Marie Rasmussen, and the Shah of Iran married a former bobby-soxer, Farah Diba.
Japan was ravaged by the worst typhoon in its history, with a toll of 5,000 lives. John Foster Dulles passed away after a long and valiant fight against cancer.
In Asia, Communist China manifested growing aggressiveness, turning Tibet into a bloody repetition of Hungary. The Dalai Lama and thousands of his subjects fled to India, which later in the year was embroiled in armed clashes with Red China over border disputes. In Southeast Asia, Red puppet forces menaced the tiny but strategic state of Laos. Grave omens for the future from the rapidly mobilizing masses of mainland China, a dark undercurrent to the mood of hope with which Ike's (illegible text)
