SET NEW POLE VAULT RECORD:
John Pennel, warming up for the U.S.-Soviet meet in Moscow, hits 16 Feet 8 3/4 inches for a new world mark. It breaks the one held by Brian Sternberg who was paralyzed in a training accident.
YESTERDAY'S BIG STORY
THE SQUALUS:
On May 23, 1 9 3 9, the submarine "SQUALUS" dived with an air intake valve open. Fifty-nine men were trapped inside and 33 were saved with a newly-developed diving bell. After four months THE SQUALUS was raised and recommissioned as the "Sailfish". It was one of the Navy's worst peacetime submarine disasters until the "Thresher" tragedy.

An atom test ban agreement has been initialed in Moscow, an historic milestone that acknowledges that man's future rests in his own hands. Pictures of past nuclear tests underline the awesome picture of doom presented by atomic power in war. After ten days of negotiations Gromyko, Harriman and Hailsham accept the agreement for thier governments. Now each country must ratify the pact.
NIXON AT EAST BERLIN WALL:
Former Vice-President Richard Nixon visits the East Berlin Wall with his family. The man who once opposed Mr. Kennedy for the Presidency expresses himself in complete accord with United States policy.
NEW FIGHTING SHIP NAMED FOR HALSEY:
The "U S S HALSEY", a guided missile frigate, is commissioned in San Francisco. It is named for famed "Bull" Halsey who routed and destroyed the Japanese fleet in campaigns during World War II.
HOVERCRAFT BEGINS FERRY RUNS:
What is proving to be the sea vehicle of the future, the Hovercraft, starts ferry service between England and Wales. It rides the seas on a cushion of air and cuts the crossing from 45 to 10 minutes.
THE CASE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION:
Canada has started a mountaineering school in efforts to curb injuries and deaths among amateur climbers. The teachers are experienced guides who instruct newcomers in the basic rules of climbing.

RUSK TESTIFIES AFTER MISSION TO MOSCOW:
Dean Rusk has busy days on the international front. He meets with Chairman Khrushchev at the Russian leader's villa on the Black Sea where they hold a series of shirt-sleeve conferences after the signing of the atom-test ban. Then he flies to Bonn where he convinces West German leaders that they should sign the Treaty and not to worry about it meaning recognition for East Germany...... He then flies home to testify before Senate committees in favor of U. S. ratification.

Senator Estes Kefauver was catapulted into nation-wide fame through the racket investigations he headed in 1951. His probing of the underworld led the next year to the Democratic convention where he sought the Presidential nomination.
