In his six-hour series, Africa's Great Civilizations, Henry Louis Gates, Jr. takes a new look at the history of Africa, from the birth of humankind to the dawn of the 20th century. This is a breathtaking and personal journey through two hundred thousand years of history, from the origins, on the African continent, of art, writing, and civilization itself, through the millennia in which Africa and Africans shaped not only their own rich civilizations, but also the wider world. Professor Gates travels the length and breadth of Africa to chronicle the continent's history from a firmly African perspective. His journey takes him from the city of Great Zimbabwe, to the pyramids of Meroe, and the spectacular rock-hewn churches of Lalibela in Ethiopia. The epic story that he tells is full of surprises and unexpected connections, helping us to appreciate the collective and individual genius of Africans who, across thousands of years, built civilizations and empires, fought wars, established great cities, furthered and spread learning, and created some of the most sublime art and architecture in human history. In this episode, Henry Louis Gates, Jr. explores the dynamism of 19th century Africa, the “Scramble” by European powers for its riches, and the defiant and successful stand of uncolonized Ethiopia.

Over the past 10 years, India and China have been among the fastest growing economies in the world. But at one time England controlled India, helping to create its major cities, and was heavily invested in China, It was England's economy and trade that dwarfed others. And it was all in the hands of the first and greatest multi-national company: the behemoth that was the East India Company. On the ground in India, Dan Snow sets out to discover the motives of those who set up the company at the beginning of the seventeenth century. How did it grow into an Imperial power? What influence and impact did the Company have on the globe? A hotbed of corruption and greed, and responsible for the deaths of over one million people, just how did the Company manage to attain such power and what led to its explosive decline?

Finding new and previously unexplained evidence, Francis Pryor overturns the idea that Britain reverted to a state of anarchy and disorder after the Romans left in 410 AD. Instead of doom and gloom Francis discovers a continuous culture that assimilated influences from as far a field as the Middle East and Constantinople. Through scrutinizing the myth of King Arthur to find out what was really going on when the Romans left, Francis is confronted by evidence that confounds traditional views of the 'Dark Ages'. There was also no invasion of bloodthirsty Anglo Saxons, rampaging across the countryside. With new archaeological evidence Francis discovers a far more interesting story.

Filmed on location at La Plata, Castro's former guerrilla headquarters- the first time any foreign film crew had been permitted there - the documentary examines the origins of Castro's revolution, and its ultimate successes and failures. It places U.S.-Cuban relations within the context of history, dating back to the Spanish-American War in 1898. The documentary goes on to paint a canvas of everyday Cuban life. It contrasts the successes of Cuba - medical care, education and housing - with the often repressive political measures implemented by the Castro government. We hear from Cuban artists, State Department officials, exiled writers, and Fidel Castro himself. We visit the Psychiatric Hospital, the Women's Prison, and a library to see what books are available. This film does full justice to its complex subject. It is neither a rationale for Communist Cuba nor a political tool for Cuban exiles. It will interest audiences of all political persuasions. 7th November, 2008 a phone rings at one of Denmark's largest shipping companies, Clipper. Somali pirates have hijacked the cargo vessel CEC Future and 13 crew members. The pirates demand 7 mio dollar. A nightmare has just begun.
For the first time ever a TV-documentary reveals the dramatic negotiations between a Western shipping company and Somali pirates. Experts are flown from London to Copenhagen to assist Clipper's CEO, Per Gullestrup, who faces a nervewrecking and very unusual task: He will have to try to strike a deal with pirates thousands of kilometers away and is under enormous pressure to free his crew members as quickly as possible. Per Gullestrup has to withstand threats and call bluffs as the crew slowly breaks down.
We followed the dramatic events in a hijacking that lasted more than two months. Authentic footage discloses negotiations, as they took place. And in an exclusive interview the pirate's negotiator reveals the tactics of the pirates on board.
Finally, 68 days later, in January 2009, the deal was finally settled and the money drop was made.

On the Queen's birthday weekend of 1989, this spectacular long gone steam event was recreated--but this time with an added attraction never seen in the train's 100 years of regular running. The recreation of the Night Mail was hauled by the world-famous 4472 Flying Scotsman and Australia's famous C-38 Class Pacific 3801; and triple-heading for part of the journey was the S Class Suburban Tank 3112.
