Ecuador's main industry is petroleum, which generates half of export earning, finances much of the government budget, and employs directly more than 12,000 people in a country of 14 million people. The oil was discovered by foreign oil companies, produced and distributed largely by them until a national company was created in 1974, and is exported to them by the government-owned company and by the remaining companies operating in Ecuador. Relations between the companies and the government have been quite turbulent, with the government taking partial ownership of the main company in 1974, buying out Gulf Oil a year later, and finally taking Texaco's share in 1992. Only medium-sized and small foreign oil companies remain, since the opportunities in Ecuador are limited, and the government has proven unreliable in its regulation of the firms. This case describes the process through which a second oil pipeline was built in 2001 to transport oil from the jungle to the coast, and the dealing between the companies and the government during that process. Even in 2004 there were several major unresolved issues that left government-company relations on very conflictive terms.

This case highlights the succession problems in the Walt Disney Company (WDC). Eisner, the Chairman and CEO of WDC, was credited with having transformed Disney from a movie studio and theme park operator into a huge media conglomerate. However many shareholders criticized Eisner for being responsible for the controversial exits of his deputies like Katzenberg and Ovitz, which involved huge multi million dollar settlements. Added to this since 2003, Eisner had fallen out with Roy E Disney. Eisner was criticized for poor governance, improper handling of WDCs business, and the failure to identify an able successor. After Eisner was voted out as chairman in March 2004, the WDC board tried to find a successor. However after many months of scouting and intense media speculation about Eisner's successor, the WDC board ended up selecting Iger, Eisner's deputy to take over the reins from Eisner from October 1, 2005.

The phenomena of mergers and acquisitions, globalisation and internationalisation of products and services and changes in organisational structures became a global trend in the developing countries. Although the Chinese banking industry was not an exception to it, there was a basic difference in their reform process to that of the other developing economies. While most of the developing nations had to adopt the trend set by the global banking giants, China had made its own norms and forced those banking giants to comply with it. Mergers and acquisitions had been replaced by strategic partnership to a maximum permissible limit of 20%, while the total foreign ownership in any bank was capped at 25%. The universal banks developed customized lending policies, bank cards and asset management products to cater to the huge retail banking market. But to appropriately manage the human resources, such international strategic alliances had to develop an understanding of stakeholder interests, aspirations and needs. Successful implementation of international joint ventures was thus a huge challenge for all the banks. The foreign partner not only needed to be strategically fit and complementary to the Chinese bank, but also had to adopt the Chinese culture and value system, and had to gradually modify the system to make it more beneficial.

This case is based on the negotiation between Google and the Chinese government to allow access by Chinese citizens to a high-speed Chinese version of the Google search engine. In order to reach agreement with the Chinese government, Google had to agree to allow the government to censor access to some sites turned up by Google’s search engine. In agreeing, Google compromised its open access policy. There were inquiries into the agreement by the U.S. Congress and some outcry from U.S. citizens.
