Through immigration, our society is becoming more diverse. However, the integration and inclusion of migrants is often difficult. ANUSCHEH FARAHAT is interested in the question of how this inclusion can be promoted through the means of law. In particular, she focuses on the structural obstacles migrants face when attempting to participate in society, such as when entering the job market or higher education. As she explains in this video, she, therefore, examines how the constitutional law in Germany can be used to combat structural inequalities. Establishing a definition of inclusion as an interactive process involving multiple actors, not only the migrants, she has found that the German constitution already provides a tool to implement such an interactive form of integration: the principle of equality. Of course, the law can only achieve integration to a certain extent as it is also dependent on the participation of the public.

India has been known to be a state that never changes. Since the 1980s, and especially after the 1990s, however, India’s growth trajectory has begun to evolve and change from its static status quo. RAHUL MUKHERJI has investigated the reasons for this change, as he explains in this video. For this, he looked at historical processes and compared processes that have achieved successful change to processes that have failed to achieve change. He found that India performs despite its slow developments in policies because they gradually achieve a consensus among political and social actors. Once this critical mass of ideas has been reached, changes in policies occur, for instance in the area of welfare policies, such as the implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

The model presented in this video combines a game theoretic approach with mechanism design to examine the influence of competition on welfare maximization by politicians. It is shown that in “pure” competition between two politicians only the allocation of favors to the electorate helps winning elections, while welfare-maximizing tools of redistribution do not improve a politician’s vote-share. As FELIX BIERBRAUER points out, one might follow that when trying to create welfare-maximizing outcomes, politics fail the same way markets do, and if the goal is to have efficient outcomes, political competition is as good or bad as a market.

DIETER GRIMM identifies three sources of this problem. First of all, the way the European Parliament, the democratic body, is elected and works is too far from the citizens. Second, the principle of subsidiarity is applied differently in every member state but remains without any...
The European Union does not have sufficient legitimacy and is not well accepted by its citizens which leads to a negative impact on the process of European integration. DIETER GRIMM identifies three sources of this problem. First of all, the way the European Parliament, the democratic body, is elected and works is too far from the citizens. Second, the principle of subsidiarity is applied differently in every member state but remains without any importance. The third source are the European treaties: as the legal foundation they were not determined by the EU itself but by the members states. Despite being ‘just’ treaties, they are considered the constitution and that creates several complex consequences in the democratic setup and the interplay between the EU and the member states. In this video these three aspects are explained in detail presenting possible solutions. GRIMM asks for a Europeanization of the elections as well as for a reorganization of the voluminous treaties into a clear constitution on the one hand and ordinary law regulating the functioning of the EU on the other hand.
