In June 1940, a junior general in the French army escaped to London determined to save France after its surrender to the Germans. Charles De Gaulle became the leader of the Free French, and the embodiment of their hope for the future. Arrogant and abrasive, through sheer force of will he asserted France's position with the Allied powers. When the Allies were ready to recapture Paris, Eisenhower held back his troops to allow De Gaulle to liberate Paris. After the war, De Gaulle was the outstanding figure in France and the natural choice to lead the new government. But the infighting among the political parties was distasteful to him and he retired from public life in 1947. In 1958, when France was torn apart by the Algerian independence movement, De Gaulle emerged from seclusion to form the Fifth Republic. Though initially he hoped to retain Algeria as part of France, in the end he realized it must gain its independence. By 1968 a new post war generation had come of age and rebelled against his authoritarianism. He resigned in 1969 and died the following year. The award winning film tells the history through the force and emotion of a personal story. It is the engaging portrait of Emil Synek, the filmmaker's grandfather, who was a revered playwright, journalist and politician in Czechoslovakia during the era of the Second World War and the Communist takeover. When he was filmed, Emil Synek in his eighties, lived in exile in Paris with his constant companion, a poodle Fifi. Emil's life was shaped by the politics of Europe. When the Nazis invaded his country he fled to London, where he joined the exiled government of Eduard Benes. In post-war Czechoslovakia he served as a diplomat until the Communist takeover of 1948 forced him and his family to flee again to the West. All his works and any mention of his life was obliterated from his country's history. His story echoes Czechoslovakia's struggle for freedom. It gained independence in 1918 only to lose it to Hitler's invading army. In 1945 the exiled government was restored but was overthrown three years later by the Communists. In this film we meet some of these creative & inventive people and gain an amazing insight into how they have overcome many hardships. Cuba is a world leader in affordable health care and many of their medical inventions have been adopted worldwide. We meet the doctors, the inventors of vaccines & the recipients of free health care. Despite the lack of materials, their artists and designers are finding ways of creating amazing new stuff and gaining international recognition. We meet some of these artists and tap into their eternal optimism. With little access to the internet, clandestine publications have been created to let the population know about the latest news, music and movies – all distributed on hard-drives around the island nation. We meet the man who created "The Package" – the weekly "underground publication" that informs most Cubans of the latest news. And despite turning out some of the best baseball players in the world, from a young age Cubans are unable to play with a real baseball as they either can’t afford one or it’s not available. We meet the little leaguers and a teenager on the verge of stardom. Despite all of these issues, Cuba is changing, opening, reinventing itself.
