During the turbulent times of the Great Depression and World War II, Franklin D. Roosevelt presided over great changes in America and the world - changes that would have been impossible without the efforts of one extraordinary man - FDR's friend and advisor, Harry Hopkins. The son of a harness maker from Iowa, and for 20 years a social worker in New York, Hopkins was invited by Roosevelt to head the Works Progress Administration (WPA) during the Great Depression. Within four weeks, he had put four million people to work. He went on to help Roosevelt establish numerous federal programs that live on today. Despite failing health, he made his greatest impact during World War II. He was Roosevelt's personal envoy to Winston Churchill, executing the Lend-Lease program and helping the country mobilize for war. His unique relationship to Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin contributed to forging agreements at Teheran and Yalta. Instead of seeking revenge, the grieving parents begin a journey of reconciliation that transforms their lives. The film follows their odyssey, which thrusts them reluctantly into the public eye as they speak out against war in Iraq and Afghanistan, oppose the death penalty for 9/11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui, and befriend his mother. Seeking to understand the nature of violence, they engage in an emotional dialog with men incarcerated at Sing Sing prison for violent crimes, who themselves seek reconciliation. Over time Phyllis and Orlando reach a new understanding of their rebellious son, who had just begun to find his way when his life was cut short. The film mixes in-depth interviews with on-location footage and striking archival photographs and video to create a deeply personal story that invites us to re-consider conventional concepts of justice and healing.

Imran Khan, a Pakistani celebrity cricket player turned politician, tries to answer these questions in this provocative documentary filmed in locations throughout Pakistan. He examines the political, social and economic causes of the schism between the Islamic world and the West. The film takes us to Islamabad's Women's College, where the students are mainly from privileged, middle class backgrounds. But even here, the underlying feeling is that the United States only cares or acts when its own people are at risk and that many American policies are determined on racial grounds against "black or brown people". In Peshawar, anti-war demonstrators believe that the war on Afghanistan following September 11th, was not justified because the West did not provide proof of the Taliban's culpability. In this part of the world, the spectre of the IMF looms large. Khan notes that as the services provided by the Pakistani government diminish under the pressure of its debts, the vacuum created has been filled by others. The poor turn to religious schools, often breeding grounds for a more intolerant version of Islam. Unsurprisingly, their influence is strongest where poverty is most pronounced. This fascinating and highly resonant report goes a long way towards explaining the problematic nature of the relationship between Islam and the West. It is a schism that developed long before the bombing of Afghanistan, and is likely to take even longer to heal. College Adult

The three-part series tell the story of six unique and powerful Irish-American politicians whose ancestors all came to America as impoverished Irish immigrants. The Irish, by the very process of coming to America, changed the country. They were the first immigrant group in the US who seized upon politics as a means of making a living and they left a permanent mark on the American political landscape which stills resonates today.
The series opens in New York in the mid 1800s with the story of Richard 'Boss' Croker, it continues in New York with the story of Alfred E. Smith. The series also covers the Kansas Machine with the story of ‘Boss’ Tom Pendergast before moving on to Boston with James Michael Curley, to Chicago with the Major Richard J.
