UNIVERSAL NEWSPAPER NEWSREEL VOLUME IV NUMBER 27
250,000 GET WORK WITH INAUGURATION OF NEW $624,000,000 AUTO PROJECT
(114)
DEARBORN, Mich. -- Henry Ford, father of the flivver, provides employment for a gigantic army of jobless men as the assembly-line of his Rouge River plant hums with activity in the development of his new type product. Mines, steel mills, and local factories are speeded up to top pitch to meet the demands of the market. The result, a departure in Lizzies, rolls out of the factory and is put through a rigid test on the "proving grounds," the first pictures of the mystery 8-cylinder car that has had people guessing for months.
MODERN YOUTH STILL UPHOLDS OLD SPIRIT OF "APRIL FOOLS" DAY
(104)
CHICAGO, Ill. -- The ancient holiday of practical jokers dawns with boys of all ages strutting their stuff in a fashion that would put their grandfathers to shame. Door-bell ringing and such old-fashioned pastimes prove too tame for the 1932-edition of foolers, who try their hand at mixing up traffic and plunging the city into darkness. But the strange antics of the kids seem only mildly entertaining when the cameraman tries his hand at playing tricks. (Some people call it fun, but it's only a headache to the editor.)
WATERLOO, N. Y. -- French horse gains world's height laurels! -- Mammoth equine stands 7 feet tall and weighs 1 1/2 tons.

FLIER'S ARMS FURNISH LOCOMOTION IN FREAK MAN-POWERED PLANE
(94)
NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Garbed in wide bat-like wings, Edward E. Blain puts his device through a stiff trial to prove his theory of aviation. Short runs fail to lift him into the air, and a jump off a rock ends with the inventor flat on his face. But with supreme faith in his brain-child the designer mounts the railing of a bridge over the Thames River, for the final test. Fearlessly he leaps into the air, spreading the full width of his wings but his flight is horizontal and he is plunged rapidly to inglorious defeat into the icy waters below. And then the law steps in to accuse Blain of flying an unlicensed aircraft!
PRESIDENT HONORED AT EASTER SUNRISE MEMORIAL SERVICES
(131)
ARLINGTON, Va. -- Standing with head bared to the inclement weather, the Chief Executive and First Lady are hailed by the thousands who throng to the early ceremonial in the great marble amphitheatre at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The Grand Commandery of the Knights Templar, sponsors of the event, carrying their jeweled swords and wearing picturesque plumed hats, add to the impressiveness of the gathering.
While in New York City the traditional display of the season's modes on Fifth Avenue, attracting a horde of 200,000 spectators eager to see what Society wears to its devotions -- quite different from Easter scenes along the "Avenue" 40 years ago.
MAYOR DECREES AUTO VIOLATORS PAY FINES IN FOOD TO AID NEEDY
(242)
MARION, Ind. -- Chief Executive Jack Edwards inaugurates a novel method of insuring provisions for the destitute of his bailiwick. Following his orders, policemen keep a keen eye on motor-vehicle law-breakers and with each ticket goes a manifesto as to the nature of the fine. Mayor Edwards tempers his sentences according to the offense, but instead of varying the number of dollars he taxes the violators with varying quantities of staple groceries, vegetables, and meats. A practical manner of solving a difficult problem.

TROOPS DESPATCHED TO QUELL DISORDERS AT MINE STRIKE ZONE
(125)
CADIZ, Ohio -- Unrest among workers in the soft coal-fields of the Hocking Valley and Sunday Creek sections is aggravated by threats of operators to put non-union labor on the job. Massed movements against the mines are organized by the dissatisfied hands, and National Guard units are rushed into the walk-out area to maintain order and uphold the law. TNT charges, planted in trees, reap a toll of casualties. Armed soldiers take up strategic positions to restrain the maneuvers of the men. The supreme sacrifice is made by several as the grievance over pay warms into a tragic commercial war.

A guard of honor led by Sir Patrick Duff, representing Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald, escorts the successor to "Hell and Maria" Dawes through the streets to the American embassy, where he will make his home and bone over such world problems as disarmament and foreign debts in an effort to cement the bond of friendship between the two great English-speaking powers.

The youngsters, hoping for a greater degree of freedom for smaller animals, visit retreats of the raccoons, 'possums, woodchucks, squirrels, song-birds, turtles, and toads where they annex the "John Hancocks" to an impressive scroll that later is presented to the city's chief executive. Motor vans and trailers, carrying minimum loads of 15,000 pounds, are driven on to flat-cars and shipped, by rail, to points as far distant as Racine, Wis., as an introductory service. Merchants and manufacturers get the benefits of the method which provides a means for automobile delivery right to the consignee's door, without risking traffic tangles, or engine trouble on long hauls. A new day for railways looms with the acceptance of the new system that may herald dividends for worried stockholders.
GERMAN SPEED KING BEATS NATION'S BEST TO WIN RACE CLASSIC
(131)
BOSTON, Mass. -- Setting a terrific pace for the 26-mile course, and just missing the record by half-a-minute, Paul De Bruyn, German-American star, romps home to a sterling victory in the 36th running of the Patriots' Day marathon. With machine-like strides the Teuton toe ace wears out a field of 220 of the country's best distance-runners. Trudging shoulder to shoulder over the last six miles with Jimmy Henigan, last-year's winner, De Bruyn lets go with a powerful spurt that wilts the 40-year-old titleholder in sight of the finish line. Strong and capable at the end of the long grind, the winner is clocked in the marvelous time of 2:33:2.5. His victory earns him a place on Germany's team at the Olympic Games this Summer.
DRY LAW REPEALED! GOVERNMENT TO SELL LIQUOR FOR REVENUE
(125)
HELSINGFORS, Finland -- Happy -- hic -- days are -- hic -- here again. Thirsty thousands pour into the restaurants, cafes and night clubs of the nation as the 12-year-old Prohibition Law is scrapped and the sale of strong beverages is put into the hands of the country's rulers. A last minute threat of an embargo by inn-keepers to combat price inflation is adjusted and fresh stocks of imported spirits are offered to the public. The bootleggers, kings of the rum trade since 1919, dry up and take their place in the republic's history -- already just a memory.

PENNY MEALS SERVED IN EX-SPEAKEASY BY RICH PHILANTHROPIST
NEW YORK, N. Y. -- A novel One Cent Restaurant is opened to provide food at copper-bottom prices for the unemployed and others of small funds. Nine thousand persons crowd its doors daily. The average check for a meal is five cents, with soup, coffee or vegetable stew at one cent each, and a wide variety of other dishes at equally low prices. Chorus girls, truck-drivers, aged thespians shop girls and others, all testify at lunch hour to the practical philanthropy of the new eating place, where a man can subsist reasonably on thirty-five cents a week.
BRITISH AIR MINISTRY HAILS FORMAL DEBUT OF NEW SKY MONSTER
ROCHESTER, England -- Britain's new aerial battleship, twice the size of any other flying craft produced in that country, takes the air in a spectacular trial spin. Ninety feet long, with a wing-spread of 120 feet, weighing more than 33 tons and fitted with six Rolls-Royce engines totalling, 5580 horsepower, the great air-craft will be used for scouting, long-range bombing and torpedo carrying. It has a crew of ten, but, as a passenger ship, could carry 115 persons. A stirring picture of a real fortress of the clouds.
4-TON BLAST HITS NEW RECORD IN HISTORY OF BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION
BARKER'S LANDING, Del. -- A half-pound stick of dynamite can make lots of noise and do plenty of damage, but to see 16,000 of them go off at once is awe-inspiring. Huge stones, mud and dirt, rising hundreds of feet in the air, form a veritable curtain across the sky. Houses are shaken as if by an earthquake for many miles around and debris is scattered over twenty-five acres, in the greatest explosives achievement in construction history.
WORLD'S BIGGEST KITE LAUNCHED AS PRAYER FOR MALE OFFSPRING
HOSHUBANA, Japan -- It's a great day for youngsters in this town when the grown-ups make a monster kite fifty feet high and thirty-six feet wide to fly as a good-luck omen for the boys of the village. It takes scores to make this kite and at least a hundred to run with it. There's a great thrill when the huge toy rises majestically into the clouds. It means prosperity for the sons of every family and a plenitude of male children to bless the declining years of aging parents. One of the world's most picturesque customs.
MIRACULOUS ESCAPES FEATURE TRAIN CRASH AT 70 MILES AN HOUR
HAMLET, Ind. -- Chicago-bound, at seventy miles an hour, an early morning Pennsy express train, rushing mail, milk and express, as well as passengers to the Windy City, left the rails here and piled up in one of the most disastrous appearing wrecks ever seen -- yet only one man was injured! How anyone could live through this mass of twisted steel and splintered railway rolling stock is one of the marvels of railroad history.
HUGE DEMONSTRATION CONCLUDES 1932 WORLD CONGRESS OF "SOKOLS"
PRAGUE, Czechoslovakia -- More than 120,000 Czechoslovakian men and women, many in picturesque peasant costumes and all members of various Sokol calisthenic organizations, march in thrilling array as the climax of the great 9th Sokol Congress. Three-quarters of a million spectators line the streets to watch and cheer. The display is the biggest event of the year in Czechoslovakia and is reviewed by President Masaryk, his cabinet and all legation heads. Nearly a million people, massed to do honor to their ideals of clean, healthy living.
LOVERS HIE TO COURT FOR FREE WEDDINGS AND COOKBOOK BONUS
CHICAGO, Ill. -- With marriages performed free of charge and a cookbook thrown in as a bonus, Judge Edward B. (Cupid) Casey of the Municipal Court here inaugurates a new era in Chicago's vital statistics. And what a rush on the part of not-too-bashful young couples to take advantage of this offer! The Judge is out to correct last month's record of more divorces than marriages in this city and that he's succeeding is evidenced by the way the hopeful swains step up for a free pass to the home plate.

GRAIN PIT STAYS OPEN DESPITE SUSPENSION EDICT BY FARM BOARD
CHICAGO. Ill. -- Defying the Federal dictum of a 60-day penalty suspension of activities, the Chicago Board of Trade celebrates the first day of the supposed closure by staging a record trading day, in which thousands of operators crowd the floor and indulge in a hurricane of sales and purchases that drive price of wheat up ten cents a bushel and other grain prices in proportion. Peter B. Carey, Board of Trade president, says his fellow members believe the Farm Board has just about liquidated its wheat futures. This belief is spurring the market to frenzied buying and is putting new hope in the hearts of producers, he asserts.
FALSE ALARMS TO BE ELIMINATED BY NEW FIRE-BOX "HANDCUFFS"
TOLEDO, Ohio -- Practical jokers and other persons who turn in false fire calls just to see the engines tearing up the street, get a rough set-back as a new alarm-box hand-trap makes its debut. With this new invention, iron forceps seize the wrist of anyone jerking the hook of a fire department alarm station, and hold him tightly until the police and fire officials unlock it. Small boys on mischief bent and cranks with fire-buff tendencies no longer are able to drag firemen out at all hours of the day and night, without paying the penalty. An unusual device with a "gripping" denouement.
18-YEAR-OLD TURKISH LASS WINS LAURELS AS 1932 MISS UNIVERSE
SPA, Belgium -- Fatima comes into her own. The legendary beauty of Ottoman femininity receives the seal of approval of modern Europe, as Miss Keriman Ahalis, petite daughter of a former chamberlain of the Sultan, is crowned as the most beautiful girl in the world. With two ravishing blondes, Miss America and Miss Germany as close contenders, the brunette Miss Turkey walks away with first honors in a field of twenty-seven contestants. A real Turkish trophy.
THE TIDE TURNS
Industry continues upward march as renewed activity calls thousands back to work
PART III
ABERDEEN, Wash. -- Lumber mills near Gray's Harbor re-employ 1000 men and women. Reawakened milling industry insures employment in many lumber camps within 30 days, as steamers load up with timber for China and other foreign countries.
GRASS VALLEY, Cal. -- Shut-down gold mines re-open and idling plants resume operations as gold strengthens in the world's marts. Hundreds of miners start again as the demand for the precious metal rises.
JERSEY CITY, N. J. -- One of the nation's leading cheese manufacturies speeds up to capacity as the country calls for its product in increasingly large amounts. 100,000 packages of cream cheese and 20,000 jars of pimento cheese, now being turned out daily, require a full complement of dairy craftsmen.
SAN FRANCISCO, Cal. -- 4,000 stevedores go back to work as intercoastal and foreign shipping takes a spurt. Matson and American Hawaii lines report a growing export trade, California fruit and Western beef finding a ready market abroad.
WORLD ATHLETES HIT WHIRLWIND PACE AS OLYMPICS NEAR END
LOS ANGELES, Cal. -- International kings and queens of water sports rise to a glorious climax in the breath-taking events that mark the closing days of the Tenth Olympiad.
United States mermaids win one-two-three in the 3-meter Springboard Diving, with Georgia Coleman leading the field, in an amazing exhibition of aqua-acrobatics.
American girls also take 1-2-3 honors in the High Diving contest. Dorothy Poynton, blonde Californian, astounds on-lookers with her graceful swan dives and other natatorial gymnastics, despite injured back that would have daunted the average girl.
Eleanor Holm, 19-year-old New York entry, scores again for Uncle Sam, by conquering the standard bearers of three continents in the 100-meter back-stroke swim, to the everlasting joy of Brooklyn, her home town.
In the most nerve-wracking finish in rowing history, the Golden Bears of California nose out the Italian eight by a scant foot in the 2000-meter race and re-establish the world supremacy of American oarsmen as 80,000 spectators go into hysterics.
Thrilling scenes of America's shell and swimming aces in their great moments of world-famed victory.
