Chicken has become a global agribusiness, and the chicken in our super markets may have come from far away Thailand. The Chicken Stampede outlines the global forces that compete for a market in which 160,000 tons of chicken are consumed each day, worldwide. The U.S. and Europe used to be the leading suppliers, but this film shows that Thailand and Brazil are waging a fight to take over. Not surprisingly, politics plays a big role in the market. The World Trade Organization used its loans to persuade the Cameroon government to open its borders to imports. The result was that local farmers were put out of business. When Avian flu struck, the largest chicken company in Thailand, CPF, did not have to kill any of its birds, whereas thousands of family farms were wiped out by order of the government. It helped to know the right people for there had been small farmers who kept their coops as safe and spotless as did CPF. The French chicken farmers were being forced out of business by the importation of low priced frozen chicken from Brazil. Finally a Farmers Confederation was formed to protect the private farmers. Through portrayals of traditional farmers up against poultry businessmen the film makes us question whether the globalization of food production is good for society. College Adult

In Coat of Many Countries we see how the clothes we wear today are the remarkable coming together of goods and services from all over the world. By following the evolution of a suit, we glimpse the practical application of the new global economy. The motivating force behind this well-traveled suit jacket is to get maximum quality at minimum labor costs. We follow the fleece from an Australian sheep farm to northern India where it is spun into cloth. The shoulder pads are made in China; the lining in Korea; the buttons in Canada; and it all meets in Hamburg. Then it's trucked to Russia, where the frontier guards are paid off, and there it is cut and assembled to an Italian design for ultimate sale at Sears. The film explains why each of the stops on the itinerary makes economic sense. And, surprisingly, the savings far outweigh the transportation costs. The manufacture of a single garment mirrors the inter-relatedness of national economies and often reflects foreign policy as well. Its development has been spectacular, with its population rising from 30,000 to 5 million inhabitants. When Hong Kong was returned to China in 1997, the frontier between the former British territory and Shenzhen theoretically disappeared. However, in actuality the border is still closed and integration is slow to occur. For Hong Kong, the risk of a massive illegal Chinese emigration is viewed as a threat to its economic stability. Also, since Hong Kong remained a free port with no import taxes, the Chinese are controlling the border to prevent those from Shenzhen using it as a way to escape taxes. The low cost of labor and real estate in Shenzhen have persuaded nearly 80% of Hong Kong manufacturers to relocate their factories there. Many successful "Hong Kongers" now want to live on the other side as well, in the beautiful new homes being built for them. High School Adult

This film about growing and selling roses is an illuminating study of the globalization of the floriculture industry. "Roses are for you, but thorns are for us," says a worker at the Ecuadorian plantation which grows these flowers for export. It is indeed ironic that this symbol of romance has become a story of exploitation and disease. The most beautiful and prized roses find perfect growing conditions in Ecuador, where huge greenhouses replace small farms and are the only employment available. However, to grow these flowers requires heavy applications of pesticides and fumigants; many plantations do not provide protective gear for their workers. There has been a huge increase in cancers, respiratory diseases and other health problems among the workers-- and their babies. In addition, the laborers are grossly underpaid and attempts to unionize have led to mass dismissals. A few enlightened companies have instituted a system of certification-- buying "certified" roses means the workers' safety was protected and their wages and workload were fair. However, certified companies have higher expenses, and are at a competitive disadvantage from non- regulated companies. This eye-opening film gives voice to both workers, owners and health officials and makes clear that producing and transporting such fragile item to customers thousands of miles away is a risky undertaking for all involved. Incredibly, all of the casinos belong to the same person: Stanley Ho, an elderly man who remains invisible and untouchable. We meet Silveira Machado who describes how cosmopolitan and lively the city was throughout the twentieth century, with Portuguese, English, French, Italians, Russians and Chinese mixing easily. The film also traces the history and special status of the city from its early days as a Portuguese settlement in the 16th century, through its development as the largest Chinese commercial port for the rest of the world. The vast Niger Delta holds an estimated three percent of the world's oil, and to the U.S. it's a vital alternative to the oilfields of the Middle East - worth $30 billion per year.The Force wants a share of this oil revenue for the people of the Niger Delta. As their leader, Al Haji Asari Dokubo, admitted in the film, the gang has brazenly stolen oil straight out of pipelines owned by some of the world's biggest multinationals. Called "bunkering", the practice is costing Western oil companies hundreds of millions of dollars in lost revenue each year. If gangs like the Force are threatened, they can disrupt Nigeria's oil supply with ease. This could lead to economic repercussions around the world.Not that the government of Nigeria seems overly concerned about cleaning up the industry, or using its massive oil wealth to help the people - some believe that they are the biggest gang of all.
