Does your favourite chocolate have a bitter taste? Maybe it will after this horrifying uncovering of brutal trafficking and illegal child labour in the chocolate industry
The programme sets out to investigate persistent rumours of child trafficking and illegal child labour in the chocolate industry. In Mali shocking hidden footage reveals illegal trafficking of small children to the cocoa fields in neighbouring Ivory Cost. Kids as young as seven years of age work in the plantations, where they face a dangerous job cutting down the cocoa and carrying heavy loads.
The Dark Side of Chocolate conflicts with the pictures painted by large international companies like Nestle, Berry Callebaut and Mars who signed the Cocoa Protocol in 2001 promising to work for a total eradication of child labour in the cocoa sector by 2008. Now, two years later, this film documents that child labour and trafficked children still is a heavy burden to the cocoa industry.

In the 21st century global food economy, most foods travel an average of 1,500 miles from farm to plate. As renowned author Michael Pollan elaborates, the impacts of this fossil fuel-driven system are detrimental to the environment, but also to our health and social well-being. Writer Michael Shuman argues that investing in local food systems lessens the distance between who we are and what we eat, and creates wealth in the community.

Today, 91% of the seafood in America is imported as the U.S. is flooded with six billion tons of foreign seafood. Most consumers eat blissfully unaware of where their seafood comes from or even think to ask. Yet, the demand-driven seafood economy is having dire consequences. FISH & MEN exposes the high cost of cheap fish by revealing how our choices as consumers drives the global seafood trade threatening local fishing communities and public health. But, a new movement is underway – an opportunity to return sustainability to both fish and fishermen. Thriving on local communities, pioneering fishermen and celebrated chefs are leading a revolutionary new supply-based model – a ‘Catch of the Day’ revival based on local, seasonal, sustainable fish – where consumers are induced to discover new varieties of storied seafood and reconnect them once again to those who risk their lives to harvest from the sea for us.

Food Fighter is the inspirational story of one woman who abandoned capitalism in favour of social activism. Ronni Kahn founded OzHarvest to wage war on food waste, and to expose an inconvenient truth: that four million tonnes of food is discarded annually while two million Aussies suffer from food insecurity. Part 1: Entrepreneur Ronni Kahn introduces OzHarvest: her organisation that's taking on government and big business to expose an inconvenient truth: that four million tonnes of food is discarded annually while two million Aussies suffer from food insecurity. OzHarvest organises the collection of food from a variety of sources and aims to redistribute it to those who need it most. Ronni discusses how private companies' unwillingness to take liability for food donations is a major cause of waste, as well as mentioning how governmental restrictions and regulations may be developed to combat this. This clip also contains an investigation into a few different farms and exposes some of the causes behind waste at the initial harvest level.
