Designers are characterized by certain trademarks that remain consistent throughout their careers, trademarks that are at the very core of their “design DNA.” In this episode, we explore the signature style of Marc Jacobs.
He appears to nonchalantly preside over a coveted domain that includes everything from a high-end signature line, it’s sister label – Marc by Marc Jacobs, menswear, fragrances to must-have accessories. Since his immediate firing from Perry Ellis after the showing of his notorious Spring / Summer 1993 Grunge Collection, Marc Jacobs has kept the fashion industry riveted for over two decades. The native New Yorker always brings a fearless approach to design. Jacobs provocatively incorporates retro references, his interpretation on classicism, and a potent color palette. Most importantly, a key signature of Jacobs is his ability to surprise us season after season – making him one of American’s most influential designers.

Designers are characterized by certain trademarks that remain consistent throughout their careers, trademarks that are at the very core of their “design DNA.” In this episode, we explore the distinctive style of Jean Paul Gaultier, who is often referred to as the fashion world's “enfant terrible.” He is a designer whose theatrical shows shake up the conventional outlook on style and break down the barriers on what is considered “beautiful.” From conical bras to Madonna’s corsets, Gaultier took corsetry out of the boudoir and put it on display. In Gaultier’s hands, the nautical stripe became a decoration that was made for more than just sailing. He is a consummate rule-breaker, and can mix multicultural references like no other. But it is his playful wit and adoration for Paris and French culture that is second to none in the fashion world.

Far removed from its heyday of the '50s and '60s, by the early eighties, the world of the haute couture was a dying business. However, a young man from the south of France planning a career as a museum curator would soon turn that world upside down. Lacroix spent several years at Hermes but by 1981 was designing haute couture for Jean Patou. It was fashion executive Jean Jacques Picart who had first spotted his talent. In 1987 Bernard Arnault made a controversial offer to the then 37 year old Lacroix to open his own haute couture house. Lacroix quickly developed an identifiable style: his silhouettes were influenced by the eighteenth century and he showed irreverence towards color, print and decoration. Somehow the king of color even survived the darkest days of '90s minimalism. In the next ten years Lacroix expanded into ready-to-wear, jeans, the popular bazaar line; and home wares.
