In a highly controversial and precedent-setting decision in mid-2005, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution permitted local governments to use their power of eminent domain to forcibly acquire private property and transfer it to another private owner. In so doing, the Court put its stamp of approval on a nationwide epidemic of eminent domain abuse. This timely and thought-provoking documentary provides an insightful case study of the uses and abuses of the power of eminent domain by the city of Philadelphia as it attempts to redefine itself through "urban renewal" and planned gentrification. On April 18, 2001, the City of Philadelphia approved the Neighborhood Transformation Initiative (NTI) -- the most ambitious urban renewal project in its history. With a proposed budget of $1.6 billion over five years, the NTI is designed to reverse a 50-year pattern of population decline, brought about in part by the city's earlier wave of postwar urban renewal. Through the use of eminent domain, the city has authorized the seizure of thousands of homes -- mostly owned or rented by the elderly, the poor, and by people of color -- in order to create a massive land bank to entice private developers to rebuild some of its most historic neighborhoods. The film explores the consequences of the city's urban renewal policies on the lifelong residents of the communities affected and places their opposition to the city in the context of an increasingly global economic order that devalues labor, local economies, and the sense of community that once formed the core of urban America. The film demonstrates that urban renewal and eminent domain policies are usually aimed at community residents who are unaware of their rights and are easily confused and frightened by the powerful forces that are changing their neighborhoods and disrupting their lives. "All for the Taking" examines the personal struggles of residents impacted by Philadelphia's urban renewal program and illustrates how housing activists are fighting eminent domain abuse. Background commentary is provided by Dr. Mindy Fullilove, Prof. of Clinical Public Health, Columbia Univ., and author of "Root Shock: How Tearing Up City Neighborhoods Hurts America and What We Can Do About It," and by Scott Bullock, a senior attorney who litigates cases involving property rights and free speech for the Institute for Justice, in Washington, D.C. This powerful documentary will engage students and generate analysis and discussion in a variety of courses in sociology and social issues, urban studies, American studies, ethnic studies, development studies, and public policy. It was produced by George McCollough.

Drug prohibition has failed. Drug usage rates have not declined and illegal drugs are more available - and cheaper - than ever before. At the same time, the costs of the drug war are staggering. More than one trillion dollars have been spent. More than 50,000 SWAT raids occur each year. Hundreds of thousands of non-violent drug offenders are wasting their lives away in prison. And more than 60,000 people have been murdered in Mexico over the past six years. 'America's Longest War' provides a brief history of drug prohibition, beginning with Nixon's declaration of war in 1971 and ending with Obama's broken promise to allow states to determine their own medical marijuana policies. It chronicles how, over the past 40 years, the drug war has escalated from a small domestic program, mostly focused on treatment, to the multi-billion dollar international war it is today.
There are many victims of the drug war, and 'America's Longest War' tells some of their stories.

An entire country watched as a poised, beautiful African-American woman sat before a Senate committee of 14 white men and with a clear, unwavering voice recounted the repeated acts of sexual harassment she had endured while working with U.S. Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas. Anita Hill's graphic testimony was a turning point for gender equality in the U.S. and ignited a political firestorm about sexual harassment and power in the workplace that resonated still today. Against a backdrop of sex, politics, and race, Anita: Speaking Truth to Power reveals the story of a woman who has empowered millions to stand up for equality and justice.

A few months after the withdrawal of the American troops from Iraq a filmmaker decides to cross the country in a taxi. From the far north to extreme south passing through the cities that featured heavily in Iraq's recent dramatic history; Erbil, Sulaymaniyah , Kirkuk, Mosul, Tikrit, Fallujah, Baghdad, Babylon, Karbala, Al Fao and Basra. It is a long and possibly dangerous journey through a war ravaged landscape.
At every step of the journey, passengers from all walks of life and various religious communities board the taxi and talk about their experiences of life in Iraq today. As they talk about their daily lives, and reveal their hopes and their fears a clear picture of the post-invasion Iraq emerges.
This is a road movie unlike any other.

'Broken Promises' is the story of how American agents in Sweden in 2001 secretly deported two Egyptian men suspected of terrorism.
The men were arrested by Swedish police and brought to an airport where they were handed over to US agents. They were then drugged, had their clothes cut off and were flown off in the now infamous white plane to prison and torture in Egypt. These are the extreme measures the West has resorted to in the war on terror. This revelation of a shocking abuse of human rights has been corroborated by similar stories in other countries. In January 2006, it prompted the EU Parliament to launch a thorough investigation into the activities of the CIA in Europe. This is a new documentary, based on several shorter stories produced in 2004 and 2005 by TV4 Sweden’s current affairs programme. The award-winning investigative work by the team consisting of Fredrik Laurin, Joachim Dyfvermark and Sven Bergman, sparked a political uproar the world over, and strained relations between the US and the EU. “Broken Promises” is an important documentary of our time that raises the question of how far we can go in fighting terrorism.

Dream On investigates the perilous state of the American Dream after decades of rising income equality and declining economic mobility. In an epic road trip, political comedian John Fugelsang retraces the journey of Alexis de Tocqueville, whose study of our young country in 1831 came to define America as a place where anyone, of any background, could climb the ladder of economic opportunity. Following in the Frenchman's footsteps, Fugelsang asks whether the optimistic spirit of the American Dream that Tocqueville popularized is alive and well in the twenty-first century, or whether George Carlin was right when he famously quipped, "It's called the American Dream because you have to be asleep to believe it."

WikiLeaks boss Julian Assange's ongoing expose of US foreign policy would not have been possible without the work of Private Bradley Manning, who is alleged to have handed over hundreds of thousands of secret US war files and diplomatic cables. Reporter Quentin McDermott tells the inside story of Bradley Manning and his daring intelligence heist.
Second only to Julian Assange, Bradley Manning is the most important figure in the WikiLeaks controversy. But, while all eyes are on Assange, Manning is wasting away in solitary confinement. David House is one of the few civilians allowed to visit him. He describes the young soldier's mental deterioration and his struggle to deal with long hours of confinement, "...the US Government is just trying to put immense pressure on him in order to get him to crack open."
The film includes interviews with Julian Assange, former military analyst Daniel Ellsberg, former WikiLeaks spokesperson Daniel Dmosceit-Berf, Manning supporter David House, hacker Adrian Lamo, and New York Times Washington Bureau Chief Dean Baquet.
