The World Orchestra for Peace came into being when Sir Georg Solti was invited to conduct a special concert in Geneva in July 1995 to mark the 50th anniversary of the United Nations. Solti, a Hungarian Jew who had fled his homeland at the outbreak of World War II, accepted the UN's invitation on one condition: that he would be allowed to hand pick his musicians. It resulted in an orchestra of 79 players from 24 countries - as much a paradigm of political as musical co-operation. In this performance, the World Orchestra for Peace plays Shostakovich's 'Leningrad' Symphony, a perpetual symbol of musical resistance to war and oppression and Debussy's La Mer.

Valery Gergiev and London Symphony Orchestra are joined by soloists Olga Borodina, Kenneth Tarver and Evgeny Nikitin for Berlioz Roméo et Juliette, recorded live at the Barbican Hall in November 2013.A large-scale ‘symphonie dramatique’, Roméo et Juliette was the fruit of the composer’s dual fascination with Shakespeare and with the actress Harriet Smithson, whom he was later to marry. Using the story of the star-crossed lovers as a starting point, Shakespeare’s passion and drama is deftly portrayed through his music, as well as through the abundance of lyrical poetry, written by French poet Émile Deschamps.

Erich Leinsdorf, the American conductor from Vienna, began his career as Bruno Walter's and Arturo Toscanini's assistant at the Salzburg Festival, débuting with tremendous success at the New York's renowned Metropolitan Opera House at the tender age of 26. After many years as musical director of the Rochester Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Boston Symphony and the New York City Opera Company, and the guest appearances with many of the world's leading orchestras, Leinsdorf continues to insist on the highest level of musicianship in everything he does. Still occupationally active at the age of 80, Erich Leinsdorf remains one of the great podium personalities of our time with a vast repertoire covering virtually every important section of the world's music literature. Our four television concerts show Erich Leinsdorf during rehearsals with the Symphony Orchestra of the Südwestfunk in Baden-Baden.

At the start of the 1997/1998 season, the renowned German maestro Christoph von Dohnanyi, Music Director of the Cleveland Orchestra, also took up the appointment of Principal Conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra, a natural progression form his previous role as Principal Guest Conductor. This highly-acclaimed conductor is known for his scrupulous concern for textural detail, cogent structural logic and his dedicated respect for the scores he works on. Recording the In Rehearsal programme, the cameras were witnessing part of the process of development of a new relationship between an orchestra and its Music Director. Dohnanyi is seen working with the Philharmonia on Haydn’s Symphony No. 88 in G for a concert in their 1998 Haydn/Bartok series at London’s Royal Festival Hall. It was to be Dohnanyi’s first Haydn performance with the orchestra and so the limited time available for preparation was of vital importance. The musician’s appreciation of his musically precise and exacting approach is evident in the concentrated atmosphere of rehearsals and also in comments they make about working with the maestro.
