MUNICH, Germany -- The great Bavarian industry reveals the 1932 debut of the concoction of the country's best masters of the art. Their efforts are hailed by throngs from all parts of the world, who flock to this capital of fine tap-beer in droves, eager to quench their thirst on the renowned amber fluid. Quaint customs, traditional with this picturesque pageant of color, are revived as the spirit of hilarity sweeps over the community. One of the oddest and most interesting pictures seen on the screen in recent years.

WASHINGTON, D. C. -- Walter Johnson's American League contenders get away to a flying start under the steady arm of Alvin Crowder and the timely hitting of Heinie Manush. The gala opening day at the National Capital attracts a host of the country's outstanding figures. The Chief Executive tosses out the first ball and the baseball season starts down the long trail to October and the World Series. Pitching air-tight ball, Danny MacFayden silences the guns of the flag-contenders until the last stanza, when Manush's double chases Freddie Myer across the plate with the lone tally of the contest.

PARIS, France -- The new French "bullet" designed by M. Stapp enters the field to dispute the honors held by Sir Malcolm Campbell's Bluebird. Claiming a velocity approaching 350-miles an hour, the inventor intends to bring the car to Daytona Beach, Fla., for a crack at the mark held by the intrepid Briton. Equipped with three 8-cylinder engines, developing 24,000 horse power, the huge car makes its maiden appearance on the streets of Paris, as experts marvel at her revolutionary principles.

LAKESIDE, Cal. -- Turning several small troublesome pools into quarters for the giant croakers, M. W. Herriman stumbles across unlimited possibilities and adds riches to his purse. Breeding them from eggs to full-sized bulls, he discovers an entirely new business in the demand for the delicate legs. Big city markets alone gobble up more than 60,000,000 pairs annually. Developing the hearty little animals, protecting them from their enemies and guiding them to a luscious 6-pound size for sale requires the undivided attention of Herriman and a score of busy assistants. The newest of California's long list of unusual and successful industries.
INAUGURATE WORLD'S SHORTEST RAILWAY; FOR SOLE PAPAL USE
(103)
VATICAN CITY -- Into the gardens steeped in the lore of past centuries steams the first touch of modern civilization -- a railroad engine. The elaborate depot and road constructed at an estimated cost of 20,000,000 lire is inspected and approved during the initial run by Italian officials and emissaries of Pope Pius XI. The unique transportation line, hardly more than 100-yards long, links the tiny church state and main railroads leading to important European cities, and marks a milestone in the modernization of the home of the head of the Catholic Church.

NEW YORK, N. Y. -- A cordon of police, guarding the rail of the George Washington Bridge, fails to dampen the ardor of Willard E. Blain, Van Buren, Ark., inventor, as he bolts from a speeding automobile, hurdles the foot-path fence and jumps into space with nothing but a home-made parachute, 5 feet in diameter, to slow up his plunge into the Hudson River's icy waters. Blain, unemployed, declares he defied destruction in the fearless stunt to attract attention to his work. He is the first man to attempt the 250-foot drop and live to tell about it.

(114)
SHANGHAI, China -- Into the vast area of desolation walk the delegates of the League of Nations, sent from Geneva to investigate the actions of Japan in the offensive against the native settlement in Chapei and Kiangwan. Representatives of the High Command greet Lytton, Claudel, Schnee and McCoy, and guide them through the waste regions, laid low by artillery and aerial warfare during the merciless 5-week attack. Razed homes of stricken thousands are viewed by the stern delegates. All comment is refused as the members repair to a hurriedly-called conference to ponder over their report to the world powers.

SPECIAL RELEASE JAPAN AND THE U. S. AT WAR IN THE PACIFIC
Savagely and without warning, the Japs attack U. S. Pacific outposts with severe loss of life and property. Even while Jap envoys in the U. S. were talking peace!
Newsreel highlights of the latest theatre of war! While Japanese envoys "talk" peace in Washington, Jap naval planes rain death and destruction on Honolulu. Jap warships aim to destroy U. S. outposts in the Pacific, while Jap troops are on the move in the Far East, into Thailand, Burma and Malaya. Britain and America both prepare to declare war, while Americans on the "home front" are bitter in their denunciation of the unprovoked attack and firm in their resolve to fight to victory.

JAPAN DEFIES LEAGUE; DISPATCHES ENVOY TO NEW FAR EAST STATE
CHANGCHUN, Manchuria -- Epochal scenes accompany the signing of the treaty protocol between Nippon and Manchukuo. The arrival of Ambassador N. Muto, commander-in-chief of the Kwantung Army, is the signal for demonstrations by thousands of Japanese school-children and other emigres from the Flowery Kingdom. Henry Ru Yi, Regent of the new Manchu government, receives the foreign plenipotentiary with ceremony at the Palace. A score of the Mikado's Major Generals and other high officers lend a significant military tone to the occasion. The Orient's challenge to world opinion. A far-reaching step in the dawning drama of the Pacific.
10,000 HOMING PIGEONS COMPETE IN CLASSIC LONG-DISTANCE DERBY
WASHINGTON, D. C. -- The Bicentennial Racing Pigeon Futurity, the biggest event of its kind ever held in the United States, has its start at the foot of the Washington Monument, with a veritable cloud of birds fluttering upward to begin their arrow-like home-ward flights over distances up to 400 miles. Prized carriers from Canada, Cuba and from every leading pigeon-loft in the U.S. take part, including the hopeful fledglings of famous war heroes who earned their citations bearing messages from beleaguered American battalions in the Argonne and elsewhere.
NEW YORK, N. Y. -- The first pigeon to reach here from Washington in the cross-country trophy race is "Jimmy Walker," a 4-months youngster who makes the distance in 4 hours, 28 minutes and 18 seconds, at a rate of 1338.46 yards a minute or more than 45 miles an hour.
ARMED FORCES HALT STRIKE PICKETERS IN COAL MINE UPRISING
CANTON, Ill. -- Machine-guns stick their menacing noses up and down the roads leading to Fulton County mines and bayonets glisten as blood-shed precipitates a tense situation in the struggle between old and new miners' unions. National Guard companies from Peoria are rushed to the scene to prevent picketing as small mine-owners and workers are hard pressed by the alleged rough-shod tactics of the dissenting pick-men. Soldier escorts offer the only safety for willing employees. A strange state of affairs, with two labor unions as the contending parties.
ODD BITS IN TODAY'S NEWS
AUTOMOBILE RUNS BY COAL
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- A pleasure car run by steam, with a few pounds of anthracite good for 100 miles, no gear shifts, a speed of 75 miles an hour, and no battery trouble, awakens the natives here as George Mershon, a furnace-grate maker, demonstrates his new invention. It resembles a regulation limousine, except for a smokestack rising from the hood.
TAMMANY HAILS WALKER'S RETURN
NEW YORK, N. Y. -- 5,000 vociferous admirers jam the North German Lloyd pier to welcome the city's former Mayor upon his arrival from France aboard the S.S. Europa. Two tugs loaded with chieftains and braves from the Wigwam of the famous Democratic organization, escort the liner up the bay. "Jimmy's" belated home-coming is noisy and enthusiastic.
PROPOSE HOMES OF GLASS BRICKS
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Startling changes in domestic arrangements are due if a new transparent building block, being demonstrated by a local factory, becomes popular in house construction. Although the tile keeps out noise, heat and cold and admits light, it lets light out, too, and doesn't promise much privacy, especially for honeymoon bungalows, for instance.
RUIN AND DESOLATION FOLLOW WORST FIRES IN WESTERN HISTORY
COCHRAN, Ore. -- Thousands of families are made homeless, numerous towns, logging camps and isolated farm dwellings are burned to ashes, and 300,000,000 feet of standing timber are wiped out in a terrific forest conflagration that sweeps over the northwestern corner of this State and southwestern Washington. Hundreds of men and women fight desperately but in vain, powerless to keep their houses from being consumed by the vicious flames. Scores save their lives by leaping into the heated streams as the waves of smoke and ret-hot embers, driven by a 50-mile wind, swoop over them. A staggering blow to the lumber country.
WOLVERINES DEFEAT WILDCATS IN SEASON'S FIRST BIG GRID TILT
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The brilliant foot-ball battle between Michigan and Northwestern, ushering in the Big Ten schedule, is filled with thrills for the 60,000 spectators, as the Evanston eleven gets the short end of a 15-6 score, due to fumbles at critical moments and the remarkable running and passing of Newman, a new pig-skin star. In the first game between the two schools in seven years, Rentnor, vaunted "power-house" half-back from the Illinois university, is smothered by the strong Michigan defense. A spectacular collegiate struggle -- the opening big-league match of the year.
