Description
The Amber Sexalogy is a combination of six separate but related films. As part of his initiation into the filmmaking process, in early 2005 Azharr shot six interconnected DV shorts dealing with different moments in the relationship between two people, Harris and Amber. The six parts all stand alone, having very different visual styles and tones, and the suite remains very much a short film project; but when strung together the films also work as...
The Amber Sexalogy is a combination of six separate but related films. As part of his initiation into the filmmaking process, in early 2005 Azharr shot six interconnected DV shorts dealing with different moments in the relationship between two people, Harris and Amber. The six parts all stand alone, having very different visual styles and tones, and the suite remains very much a short film project; but when strung together the films also work as an odd kind of hybrid feature. It's probably worth reiterating at this point that the Amber films are exploratory short films by a young filmmaker learning the craft and as such are not intended to function as a conventional entertainment narrative. The films are not without their limitations, but they demonstrate a depth of ambition and thought which bodes well for Azharr's future work.

Despite at times occupying the same physical space, the protagonists each indulge in the privacy of their separate inner-worlds. Since the woman he loved rejected him, he has lived in the western desert, hiring skilled swordsmen to carry out contract killings. His wounded heart has made him pitiless and cynical, but his encounters with friends, clients and future enemies make him conscious of his solitude... The film is set in five parts, five seasons that are part of the Chinese almanac. The story takes place in the jianghu, the world of the martial arts. Ouyang Feng (Leslie Cheung) has lived in the western desert for some years. He left his home in White Camel Mountain when the woman he loved chose to marry his elder brother rather than him. Instead of seeking glory, he ends up as an agent. When people come to him with a wish to eliminate someone who has wronged them, he puts them in touch with a swordsman who can do the job.

By carefully preserving the regional dialect and customs in his prose, poet and playwright Salvatore Di Giacomo captured the unique essence of Napolitanita: the ability of the Italian working class to maintain their dignity even as they struggle for survival. In harmony with this approach, Assunta Spina was shot largely on location, capturing precious glimpses of life on the streets of Naples, and presaging the rise of Italian Neorealism.

Banyu, a supermarket customer service representative, is obsessed with finding out why his father left the family after the accidental death of his little sister Biru. Convinced that his father, a scientist, was an uncaring man who kept his family at a distance while self-absorbed with his work, Banyu is haunted by questions. As a little boy, he turned inside to a world of fantasy and isolation, finally leaving home as a young man. Banyu has not seen his father for ten years and decides to find him and confront him. On Banyu's road trip, he encounters some colorful characters, including his uncle and a young woman who lived next door as a child. They challenge his reality and how he remembers his youth. Ultimately, Banyu must confront his father if he is to make peace with his childhood memories.
