A detective (Huang Guangliang) searches for an elusive Li Chonggao. Failing at that, he collects evidence taken from a rumpled bed, photographs the empty room, and attempts to question the locals. Outside the room, he meets a mysterious and enigmatic young woman, Yu Ran, who refuses to reveal how she is connected to Li Chonggao. He suspects she may be the key to capturing Li, but she reveals no secrets. When she refuses his friendship and eventual advance, his story ends there, while another man and his connection to Yu Ran begins. He too is looking for Li Chonggao. The surreal double roles and role reversals may recall Antonioni's classic 1960 film about isolation, L'Avventura. Similarly, Before Born has its backdrop in a coastal town and against lonely places and lonely spaces in this search for a lost person. Its provocative ending leaves us to ponder the past and the future of Yu Ran.

A-long comes from a long line of dragon dancers and is driven to prove his own worth. A pride to their town of Longphozai, his family has always observed cultural traditions and respected the village leaders -- unlike A-long's childhood sweetheart Fengmei. Wilful and rebellious, Fengmei is determined to be with A-long even if it means flouting the Huayao tradition by joining A-long's dragon dance team. Her impulsive charisma drives the team into numerous fixes and repeatedly brings the wrath of the village elder down upon a frustrated, confused A-long. But with a major dragon dance competition approaching, can A-long and Fengmei learn to balance their love with their cultural traditions? Or will they be forced to sacrifice one for the other? This lighthearted comedy deftly intertwines traditional Huayao song, dress and dance to illustrate the role of historical tradition in modern young love, and shot with brilliant scenery of China's countryside. Awards: Nominated 2005 Golden Rooster Best Actress, Won 11th Huabiao Best Feature Film Award, Won 11th Huabiao Best Newcomer Award, Won 12th Beijing Undergraduates Film Festival Best Actress.
