Manual Jordan (Billy Bob Thorton) is a man caught between two worlds: the one which existed before he was incarcerated, and the one into which he's released 22 years later. A yellowing newspaper photograph of 16-year-old convience store clerk Abner Easley - the boy Manual killed in a robbery gone terribly wrong - has stared down at him from the wall of his cell for more than two decades. Manual feels that his life sentence is just and deserved, so when - much to his surprise and even somewhat against his will - he's released, the aimless boy is now a lost man. Floating through the barely familiar wintry landscape of his childhood neighborhood, Manual is like a ghost hungry for atonement, seemingly alienated from everything except for his terrible memories of the day which changed not only his life, but that of so many others as well. He glides through this strange new world a man apart, his wraith-like aspect and deeply formal, barely articulate manner guaranteed to ensure solitude. Almost by accident - or fate - Manual is drawn into the life of an inner city community center run by the relentlessly tough, caring, and enigmatic pastor Miles Evans (Morgan Freeman). Miles offers Manual work in return for a room, and once again, Abner Easley's photo is prominently placed, reminding Manual to come to terms with his crimes, his past, his future, himself. While Manual tries to confront his past, Sofia Mellinger (Kirsten Dunst) is unable to deal with her present. A beautiful and privileged wreck of a young woman bent on self-destruction, she constantly requires Manual's reluctant assistnace to survive the short trip from the hip nightclub across the street to the safety of the community house next door. Ultimately Manual seeks to reconcile his painful past when he pursues a relationship with Adele Easley (Holly Hunter), the older sister of the boy he killed. Yet he finds himself unable to confess his true identity to her, especially as their relationship deepens. When Adele's troubled teenage son Abner - named after the younger brother she loved and lost - becomes enrolled in his own cycle of violence, Manual sees what might be one opportunity for true redemption. Twenty-two years of haunted introspection have taught Manual a brutal truth passed down since Cain slew Abel: the only one who truly understands the value of a human life ... is the one who has taken that life away.

During the early 1960's, Paris, like the much of Europe, was an explosion of life. As the old gave way to the new, everything was in flux and the city was filled with a energy that promised cultural shifts and social change. Against this background, in a working class neighborhood, two unlikely characters—a young Jew and an elderly Muslim—begin a friendship. When we meet Momo (Pierre Boulanger), he is in effect an orphan even though he lives with his father, a man slowly retreating into a crippling depression. His only friends are the street whores who treat him with genuine affection. Momo buys his groceries at the neighborhood shop, a crowded dark space owned and run by Ibrahim (Omar Sharif), a silent exotic looking man who sees and knows more than he lets on. After Momo is abandoned by his father, Ibrahim becomes the one grownup in Momo's life. Together they begin a journey that will change their lives forever.

Quinceañera is a look at what happens when teenage sexuality, age-old rituals, and real estate prices collide. It is a story fueled by the racial, class, and sexual tensions of a Latino neighborhood in transition. Magdelena (Emily Rios) is the daughter of a Mexican-American family who runs a storefront church in Echo Park, Los Angeles. With her fifteenth birthday approaching, all she can think about is her boyfriend, her Quinceañera dress, and the Hummer Limo she hopes will carry her on her special day. But a few months before the celebration, Magdelena falls pregnant. As the eleborate preparations for her Quinceañera proceed, it's only a matter of time before her religious father finds out and rejects her. Forced out of her home, Magdalena moves in with her great-great uncle Tomas (Chalo Gonzalez), and old man who makes his living selling champurrado (a Mexican hot drink) in the street. Already living with him is Carlos (Jesse Garcia), Magdelena's cousin, a tough cholo who was thrown out by his parents. Carlos does not disguise his disapproval of Magdelena's arrival. The back house rental where Tomas has lived happily for many years is on a property that was recently purchased by an affluent white gay couple (David W. Ross and Jason L. Wood) -- pioneers of gentrification in the neighborhood. Inevitably, worlds collide when they become entangled in the lives of their tenants. As Magdelena's pregnancy grows more visible, she, Carlos, and Tomas pull together as a family of outsiders. But the economics of the neighborhood are turning against them. Ultimately, this precipitates a crisis that threatens their way of life.

In Saraband, Marianne and Johan meet again after thirty years without contact, when Marianne suddenly feels a need to see her ex-husband again. She decides to visit Johan at his old summer house in the western province of Dalarna. And so, one beautiful autumn day, there she is, beside his reclining chair, waking him with a light kiss. Also living at the summer house are Johan's son Henrik and Henrik's daughter Karin. Henrik is giving his daughter cello lessons and already sees her future as staked out. Relations between father and son are very strained, but both are protective of Karin. They are all still mourning Anna, Henrik's much-loved wife, who died two years ago, yet who, in many ways, remains present among them. Marianne soon realizes that things are not all as they should be, and she finds herself unwillingly drawn into a complicated and upsetting power struggle. "Saraband can be seen as a concerto grosso, a concert for full orchestra only, here, with four soloists," says Ingmar Bergman. "The drama consists of ten dialogues that follow a particular pattern, and it's an attempt at analysis of a difficult situation." A saraband was an erotic dance for two that was very popular at royal courts in the 17th and 18th centuries. But it was prohibited in Spain as being indecent.

It’s not easy growing up, no matter what age you are… Justin Cobb (LOU PUCCI) still sucks his thumb at 17. He wants to stop and knows that his thumbsucking is disrupting his family, his love life and his identity. The only thing that changes his behavior is hypnosis therapy administered by his 'guru' orthodontist. But while Justin felt this would solve all his problems and he would finally be 'normal,' his troubles were really just beginning. Thumbsucking was only a symptom of a deep-seated fear: that he and his father aren’t good enough for his mother, and that she would leave them. Thumbsucking was the only way to soothe this fear. Once that is gone Justin spirals into manic behavior, is diagnosed with ADHD and put on Ritalin, which becomes a substitute for his thumb. When the high of the prescription drugs and a newfound success at school crash, Justin turns to pot and sex to replace his thumb. His father Mike (VINCENT D’ONOFRIO) is himself shadowed by the sad twists of youth: a broken college football career apparently sidelined by a knee injury. In many ways Mike feels like a teenager, yet he finds himself in his early 40s with his eldest son still sucking his thumb as he’s heading to college and his wife seeming to drift away. Mike hides his fears and disappointments with tough behavior – but that trick is running dry. He is growing out of the lies and denials that got him from college to the present. Did he ever really want to be a jock? Is that a false self that he has hidden in for all these years and doesn’t know how to evolve out of? His wife Audrey (TILDA SWINTON) wonders how she could possibly be 'grown up' with a son going to college. She seems to be asking 'How did I get here?' and 'Is this all there is?' In her early 40s, she is, like Justin, struggling to find out who she is and to accept her shortcomings. As a mother she knows that she doesn’t have all the answers to Justin’s troubles, and that she is sometimes too busy dealing with her own doubts to help him. Audrey hides from these realities through an obsession with a TV heartthrob, Matt Schraam (BENJAMIN BRATT), whose TV character seems to have all the neat answers, but his real drug addicted self reveals messier truths to both her and Justin. Little brother Joel (CHASE OFFERLE) is mostly oblivious to the family’s dynamics, and thinks his troubled older brother is embarrassing. Joel provides comic relief with his lack of doubt in a family full of questions, yet his strong-mindedness may be misunderstood. Justin turns to others outside his family to help. His New Age orthodontist, Perry Lyman (KEANU REEVES), seems to mirror Justin’s ups and downs. They both try on different personas that hide their doubts and fears. Perry transforms into an EST/FORUM-style high achiever before winding up a washed-up mess who stops looking for disguises and easy answers, finding a strange kind of happiness in the process. At school, Mr. Geary (VINCE VAUGHN), Justin’s debate coach, initially tries to help.
