At a time of Brexit and other restrictive sanitary-related lockdowns, it is obvious to say that we miss groups such as Hannah Williams & The Affirmations. This 9 musician band, very present on the international scene, was born in this small corner of southwest England well known for its rich musical history, Bristol. A story that this dapper “soul lady” has been writing brilliantly for a handful of years with two equally successful studio recordings (Late Nights & Heartbreaks -2016, 50 Foot Woman-2019). Two finely tuned choristers and a guitarist on the left, two brass instruments capable of blowing calm as well as a storm and a bass player on the right. In the center a multitasking keyboard, a versatile drummer, and at the front of the stage this breathtaking and volcanic Hannah Williams, whose vocal power is matched only by the great female figures of blues, soul and rock. Janis Joplin, Etta James, Patti Labelle, Aretha Franklin... These names will inevitably come to mind. But the incredible effect produced by this obviously cohesive band when they find themselves on stage is completely theirs. Listening, for example, to "Part Time Lover", a track sampled by rap star Jay Z in 2018, as well as this stunning cover of "Dazed & Confused" (Led Zeppelin), you will discover for yourself the formidable magnetic power of this young band. This is the case of “Feelin' Alright?,” the track by the British rock band Traffic; “A Whiter Shade Of Pale,” the ballad of pop goldsmiths Procol Harum; and "The Letter," the composition written in the 60s by Alex Chilton and the Box Tops. Supported by a solid ensemble including two backup singers, this Italian singing tour reminds us, above all, of the Plumber of Sheffield’s taste for Afro-American music: soul, and of course, the blues. This characteristic is confounding when listening to the powerful "Delta Lady," or the hit "You Are So Beautiful," based on a song by the organist and close friend Billy Preston. Different from the superb musical review Mad Dogs & Englishmen (a double album to be enjoyed, if possible, in a deluxe version), but just as touching, this Italian performance announces above all the moment of the musical renaissance: the Sheffield Steel and its Caribbean swing by Sly & Robbie, and also FM hits such as "Unchain My Heart" and "You Can Leave Your Hat On." Multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and producer, it’s hard to find an artist as versatile and most of all durable as the critically acclaimed ‘Godfather of Blues’. At 88 years old, and still very much active to this day, John Mayall’s achievements puts all of us to shame. It only took a small trip to Japan during military service for him to pick up his first electric guitar; the rest is history. The original blues breaker came to be in 1956, and nothing has been able to stop him since. His sales numbers rival those of Iggy Pop, Buddy Guy, or even new blood like Jake Bugg, which earned him two golden records (on The Turning Point and Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton), as well as a nomination for the Grammys in 1994. Known for having an eye for talent, and incredible collaborators, it was not surprising to notice that the Bluesbreakers’ big comeback included future stars like Walter Trout and Coco Montoya. During this 1987 performance at Iowa State University, John introduces his revamped blues ensemble to a new generation of fans, and puts the world on full notice: John Mayall is here to stay, and still rocks as well as ever! If there was one folk-pop artist who also delights jazz fans it is the Canadian Joni Mitchell. Isabel Sörling, the most French of Swedish singers, here pays tribute to this immense writer and performer by building a sumptuous program around songs taken mainly from the albums Clouds, Blue and Hejira as well as her personal readings of "Both Sides Now," "Black Crow" and "The Circle Game," that magnificent song about the passage of time from childhood to adulthood. Isabel Sörling also comes from the world of folk while being sensitive to jazz breathing techniques and she is a composer and character, like Mitchell, who performs without artifice. As such she knows how to fit seamlessly into the icon's singular universe, especially as the suppleness of her voice, her phrasing, her sense of silences and whispering marry to the sound of her model, to the point of exuding great emotional force. For this performance, Sörling surrounds herself with the finest French jazzmen, musicians who know how to match her sober posture; they are undoubtedly proud of the comparison with Mitchell's fellow travellers like Jaco Pastorius, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Larry Klein.
