It has become cliché to point out the major influence of Steve Reich on electronic music. Numerous articles and analyses have already brilliantly explained the link between the minimalism of the American composer and “electronic music”. But this relationship takes on its full meaning when it materializes in music, before our eyes. Sourdoreille and La Compagnie des Indes have invited DJ Chloé and marimbist Vassilena Serafimova to work freely on Reich's work. At the helm is Chloé, a DJ and producer who is a fixture of Parisian nightlife, founder of the Kill The DJ label with Ivan Smagghe. Even if she is accustomed to the turntables of the biggest clubs, from the Panorama Bar in Berlin to the Rex in Paris, via the Fabric club in London, Chloé is also used to more experimental sound research which has allowed her to collaborate with the Center Pompidou and the Cinémathèque Française among others. Opposite her, on the marimba, is Vassilena Serafimova, a virtuoso musician of Bulgarian origin who has been seen, notably, in duo with the jazz pianist Thomas Enhco at the Victoires de la Musique Classique. After a few days of creation in the studio where they prepared pre-recorded tracks, the two musicians set up a dreamlike live performance for the collection Variations, playing with sounds and our perceptions. They are constantly passing the ball back and forth, appropriating the techniques of Steve Reich and experimenting, as when Vassilena stretches adhesive tape over her marimba ... A hypnotic and intoxicating four-hand electro-acoustic performance. Etienne Geremia

There are musical experiments that leave you unmoved; this is not the case when listening to Sequenza, the performance of the female duo formed by the leading figure of the electro scene Chloé Thévenin and the Bulgarian marimba virtuoso Vassilena Serafimova (here, most often she plays like Gary Burton with four mallets. She also occasionally uses a caxixi, cymbals, sometimes rubbed by a musical saw. When she no longer uses her mallets but bamboo sticks, the sound emitted is closer to the African balafon). The performance is captured in an empty terminal at Orly airport; the sound fills the space without giving the icy feeling of a science fiction scene. This unexpected meeting of two aesthetics marks the fusion of electronic sequencers and marimba in a dazzling rhythmic pulsation. The two partners, although coming from two different worlds, scholarly and contemporary music for the Bulgarian and the electro scene for the French, have succeeded in forging a real complicity to the point of co-signing each theme presented, delivering an alliance of bewitching sounds and a constant warm musicality, far from the screeching of some contemporary music. Each artist’s solo part is continuously supported by her partner, so that the listener always has the feeling of listening to a living dialogue of the duettists. It's intellectually stimulating, very pleasant to listen to, and creates a mad desire to discover them “live.” Philippe Lesage

Sometimes we come across unexpected, if not incongruous, encounters that turn out to be amazing, disturbing and inventive. This concert is a perfect example of this phenomenon. We see Norwegian musicians Nils Petter Molvær and Eivind Aarset fusing jazz, rock and ambient music with a World-class Jamaican rhythm section composed of drummer Sly Dunbar and bassist Robbie Shakespeare – both of whom shaped the "Rub A Dub Style" and hundreds of Reggae music hits since the ‘80s. This meeting was initiated by Robbie Shakespeare, who admits that he has always had a fascination with the imagination of the trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær. And whilst this clash between aesthetically distant musical worlds is already enough of a gamble, it pays off – the project is delivered with total adhesion, eventually finding its discographic form through the album *Nordub* in 2018. As if giving us a clue or a unique entry point, during the performance Robbie sings a few verses from The Abbyssinians: "The book of life; there is a land far from away". With these musicians, that book of life opens onto a dreamlike country where the floating atmosphere of Norwegian Nu jazz transcends the 'riddims' of Jamaica, where melancholic reveries are anchored in an earthy dimension carried by the dry drumming. Truly fascinating. **Philippe Lesage**

When the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt composed "Fratres" in 1977, he deliberately did not specify the instrumentation, which has resulted in numerous interpretations by string quartets, piano and violin or cello, with or without percussion. But Mari Samuelsen and Dubfire have gone beyond the “classic-contemporary” framework to bring the work to another dimension. The Norwegian violin star, adored by Max Richter and for whom film composer James Horner (Titanic, Braveheart ...) composed the concerto for her first album, has teamed up with Ali Shirazinia aka Dubfire, an American-Iranian DJ capable of igniting the dancefloors of Ibiza or winning a Grammy Award (for the remix of Dido "Thank You" with his duo Deep Dish) but also of attacking one of the most fascinating minimalist composers! And that is the beauty of this unprecedented encounter, initiated by the Sourdoreille collective and La Compagnie des Indes at the Cabaret Sauvage, as part of the Variations collection. The opportunity for the duo to deliver an electro-acoustic version of "Fratres", progressive and powerful, which starts with the original motive but moves more and more towards a minimal techno dance, and which does not fail to expose the true value of Mari Samuelsen’s virtuosity. A fascinating and innovative ritornello that honors the work of Arvo Pärt. Etienne Geremia

A grandiose overture on the famous notes of the Toccata. Gaspar Claus' cello acts like an organ under his effects pedals, and Electric Rescue’s machines enter the scene to give the strings a beautiful electric setting. The duo tackles the masterpiece of Johann Sebastian Bach, a monument that they will deconstruct, rearrange, and shake up without restraint for half an hour. With great blows of distortions, electronic layers and techno inflections, the two accomplices revisit Bach in an unexpected and highly enjoyable way. Gaspar Claus, who started playing the cello at the age of 5, masters his instrument and knows his classics, even if he has oriented his career towards other musical horizons. Here he takes a perverse pleasure in "trashing," to use his own word, the work of the master who has written so much for his instrument. Accustomed to electro-acoustic encounters, this is the first time that he has collaborated with Electric Rescue, a pillar of rave and French techno, as part of the Variations collection. This series brings together, at each concert, an electronic music producer and an instrumentalist who are challenged to reinterpret the work of an emblematic composer, and in the ranking of emblematic composers Bach certainly holds a choice place! It is therefore a daring but frankly successful challenge for Gaspar Claus and Electric Rescue, who offer a new reading by the German composer, resolutely modern and very elegant, ending with a devilish version of the Prelude of the Cello Suite No. 1 in G major as a finishing touch. A magisterial and emotional bow. Etienne Geremia

In the history of cinema, there are mythical director-composer pairs, such as Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone, Steven Spielberg and John Williams, or Alfred Hitchcock and Bernard Herrmann. It is to the latter that techno producer Zadig and pianist Thomas Enhco pay tribute in this new episode of the Variations series, produced by the Sourdoreille collective and La Compagnie des Indes, bringing together an electronic DJ-producer and an instrumentalist for each part. . Herrmann's compositions greatly amplify the frightening nature of Hitchcock's images, as we see clearly here, where the duo have chosen to draw freely on the soundtracks of the machiavellian Cold Sweats (Vertigo) and the disturbing Psychosis. To do this, the brilliant Thomas Enhco worked tirelessly to transcribe, by hand, the orchestral score into a piano part, which he then copied into software so that the sequences constructed with Zadig were harmonious. With this onerous task accomplished, the two artists were able to construct their hybrid work. Zadig, a key figure of the Parisian techno scene, known for his powerful sets, shapes electronic textures and rhythms on which the young piano prodigy Thomas Enhco lays down his remarkable jazz improvisations. Machines and piano come together in the service of an eerie musical narration, in the style of Herrmann, which makes you want to dive back into Hitchcock's filmography. You will emerge from this experience with a head full of images! Etienne Geremia

Gustav Holst is currently being quoted by various jazz musicians such as Ed "Tenderlonious" Cawthorne, a rising flautist who describes the classical composer's work as dramatic and captivating. Author of the symphonic work The Planets, based on an epic cycle around seven stars of our solar system, the English composer is revisited here by Dave Clarke and Mathilde Marsal. Renowned for his numerous remixes (Depeche Mode, Leftfield, Mirwais…) and for a rather faithful approach to the sound of Detroit, the techno DJ starts the set with different interstellar sounds. Fundamentally expressionist but never perceived this way, the main synthetic composition unfolds a hypnotic musical carpet, on which hover the chords of the violinist Mathilde Marsal. However, the French soloist does not stop at illustrating the transcendental programming of Dave Clarke. Fond of electronic rhythms, she feels, understands, and confronts her strings and her bow to the sometimes sustained tempo of the British producer. These are rather skillful arrangements, developed sparingly, as in the last part of the concert, where Mathilde Marsal streaks the frantic rhythms with short but dazzling solos. Vincent Caffiaux

In France TV’s Variations showcases, duos create electronic-acoustic collaborations that are like dives into the unknown. In its fourth season in 2019, Variations presented an unprecedented encounter of Detroit techno innovator Robert Hood with Afrobeat saxophonist Femi Kuti to bring to new life to the little-known music of the Godfather of Soul, James Brown. The jazz side of JB from the horn of Pee Wee Ellis was the focus. The electronic producer largely lays the foundation for the set with his minimalist beats and experimental colors which free Kuti to deliver his explosive improvisations. Kuti says that Robert “built the house and I did the decoration.” There are stretches of call-and-response grooves as well as chants of “stomp your feet” and sample-like JB singular shouts. Femi’s father was the master Fela Kuti who controversially jazzified the Ghana-born highlife music in his native Nigeria and became known as the African James Brown. He was the chief purveyor of Afrobeat. A virtuoso on his instrument, Femi takes the source and charges ahead with an edgy brew of pop, soul, avant-jazz. No lyricism, just grit and determination. While the pair had never worked together, based on a telephone conversation prior to this show, they agreed that they linked spiritually. Dan Ouellette
