Close friends at the time, Barenboim as artist and Nupen as film-maker, were on the cusp of long and illustrious careers in music. Much of the material they shot has never been broadcast and, until recently, the footage had lain dormant for half a century. Now, as we celebrate the 250th anniversary in 2020, the series has been resurrected in its original form. It was recorded when Daniel Barenboim was in his late twenties, full of talent, charisma and early authority. During the episodes, he talks and plays extracts at the piano, illustrating the defining characteristics of Beethoven’s compositions and sharing his personal insight into the composer’s mindset. Throughout, he addresses the camera directly as presenter, adding to the intensity of the narrative. For orchestral pieces, he conducts the New Philharmonia Orchestra or plays at the piano with Sir Adrian Boult taking the conductor’s baton. Barenboim On Beethoven is a musical journey charting Beethoven’s progression in the context of his contemporaries such as Mozart and Haydn. Over twenty key compositions are performed and dissected, making this a unique body of work.

In Search of Beethoven offers a comprehensive and dynamic account of the life and works of the great composer. The film features 65 performances by the world's finest musicians. In addition 100 interviews were conducted in the making of this beautifully crafted film. In Search of Beethoven has brought together the world's leading performers and experts to reveal new insights into both Beethoven the man and his music. The line-up of performers and interviewees includes Gianandrea Noseda, Sir Roger Norrington, Riccardo Chailly, Claudio Abbado, Fabio Luisi, Frans Brüggen, Ronald Brautigam, Hélène Grimaud, Vadim Repin, Janine Jansen, Paul Lewis, Lars Vogt, and Emanuel Ax among others. The film is narrated by Juliet Stevenson and young RSC actor David Dawson. The film delves beneath the mythical image of the tortured, cantankerous genius to search for the real Ludwig van Beethoven. In Search of Beethoven addresses the romantic myth that Beethoven was a heroic, tormented figure battling to overcome his tragic fate, struck down by deafness, who searched for his 'immortal beloved' but remained unmarried. The results reveal someone quite different and far more interesting. In Search of Beethoven takes a comprehensive look at the composer's life through his musical output. Having created a successful and critically acclaimed blueprint with In Search of Mozart, Phil Grabsky documents each piece of music chronologically marrying it to Beethoven's biography and letters.

Following his award winning documentaries, In Search of Mozart and In Search of Beethoven, Phil Grabsky continues the series with In Search of Haydn. Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) was one of the greatest musical innovators. Mozart and Beethoven greatly looked up to him as an inspiration and yet today in concert halls he is perhaps too often overshadowed in favour of his younger contemporaries. As Andras Schiff recently pointed out: "The world needs to appreciate him much more: of all the really great composers, he is still the most underrated". By speaking to some of the greatest living exponents of Haydn's music, this film redresses the balance and sheds light on the master and his work. Phil Grabsky hopes that Haydn will reach a wider audience who will be surprised, entertained and enthralled by Haydn’s wit, humanity and insatiable creativity. Haydn's life spanned from the end of the Baroque period to Napoleon's invasion of Vienna, outliving his younger friend Mozart. He was one of the most prolific composers, producing more than 100 symphonies, 64 quartets, 16 extant operas, 51 piano sonatas and the oratorios 'The Creation' and 'The Seasons'.His seemingly light-hearted, placid temperament embraced the troubles and tribulations of life with casual humour and irony. Though blessed by an encouraging patron, running his own orchestra and opera company for some 30 years on the Esterhazy Estate, he was exposed to the usual upstairs-downstairs antics of an aristocratic household and follies of an artistic world. These years proved to be enormously productive, inspiring Haydn to write numerous works to please his patron and his eminent guests with witty theatrical evenings, jokes and the occasional prank. Phil Grabsky follows the same format of presenting the composer's biography and music chronologically. Through intimate and revealing interviews with experts and detailed extracts from Haydn's personal recollections, the audience gains tremendous insight not only into Haydn's music but an appreciation of the artist himself. The emphasis of the film, as with the previous films, is on the performance - and interpretation - of Haydn's music, with performances from the world’s greatest musicians and orchestras.
