Bayaka believe in a divine creator, Kumba, who created the world and then retreated. Bayaka life in the rainforests is intimately connected with many different types of spirit, many of which must be propitiated for ecological and social wellbeing. Some spirits, such as bobé, appear in leaf form, sometimes even glowing in the dark. Some spirits, such as the women's Lingboku spirit, are heard but not seen. Other spirits are believed to be present in birds such as owls. In this clip Louis Sarno talks about meeting spirits in the forest.

Les Amazones d’Afrique is a group that brings Malian women together around issues such as equality and freedom. With their voices steeped in history, they spread messages through music. In 2015, these women created this collective, and two years later, they are playing at the Paris Philharmonic. Their concert takes us on a journey as they paint a scene of bright colours dressed in their sublime traditional outfits. The musicians settle down slowly, and Kandia Kouyaté – the matriarch – sits in an armchair in the middle of the stage. Rokia Koné, with her enchanting voice, sings traditional songs with the choir before Mamani Keita joins the group, singing one of her compositions and then sitting down in front of the percussion section. Before long, Babani Koné arrives in impressing dress. Her voice is dry, broken in the high notes, and marked by her experience. The women proceed to link in duos, trios, and the sounds are soothing and intoxicating in equal measure.

Its repetitive melodic and rhythmic patterns accompany the initiates into a trance, bringing together the world of spirits and the living for therapeutic purposes. A tradition that Aziz has brilliantly appropriated and reinvented for the past 10 years with his University of Gnawa, unabashedly mixing this Moroccan heritage with Mandingo culture (Cheikh Diallo's kora), jazz and rock sounds, with dance as the only watchword.
It must be said that Aziz Sahmaoui has never ceased, for several years, to deconstruct the folkloric image of what is too generically called “world music.” With the Orchestre National de Barbès, which he co-founded in 1995, he has proudly carried the Maghrebian colors in a cheerful and unclassifiable musical fusion.In 2005 he continued his experiments with the Zawinul Syndicate until 2007, the year of the death of Joe Zawinul, famous keyboardist of the Miles Davis jazz-fusion period and founder of Weather Report.
After three albums and hundreds of concerts around the world, Aziz Sahmaoui continues his research and celebrates in 2021 the 10 years of the University of Gnawa with a “best of” record and a concert at the Africolor Festival. Enter into the trance!
