In Chile today there are three indigenous groups who are direct descendants from pre-Hispanic dwellers of America: the Aymara, the Qawashqar (also called Alakaluf), and the Mapuche (also called Araucanian). These are protest songs from the Peasant Wars of the 16th century that have been preserved orally for centuries and continue to live on through Roth’s interpretation in this two volume-collection of Early German Ballads .
