One hundred years ago, the Herero people of Namibia were nearly exterminated by German colonial soldiers in what has become known as the first genocide of the 20th century. Herero men, women and children were rounded up like cattle and put into Germany's first ever concentration camps. Four years later, three-quarters of the entire Herero nation had perished at the hands of German colonialists. The Nazis used the experiences from the German concentration camps in Namibia as well as their experiments in "racial science" when they formulated the Final Solution during World War II a few decades later. Today the Hereros claim billions of euros from the German government in repatriation for the genocide. The experience of one family is described by a descendant, a 23-year-old Herero woman named Georgina. She has a fair complexion and a green tinge to her eyes. Georgina is aware of the fact that her great-grandmother was raped by a German soldier and now wants to confront the demons of her own genetic past. High School College Adult

The transformation of China into a global superpower raises some of the most challenging questions of our time – and this revealing series seeks out the answers. Will this turn out to be China’s century or will the Red Dragon crash and burn? Niall Ferguson travels through this vast country to find out how a fifth of humanity can live under a Communist system of government with a capitalist economy when, according to all the laws of history, it should fall apart. Held together for more than 2000 years, firstly by imperial rule and now by an imperious Communist Party, what does China stand for? Ferguson talks to the people who know – including its new billionaires, survivors of Chairman Mao’s regime, ardent young nationalists and those defending China’s rural poor.

SynopsisEnglish synopsisA documentary covering the final year of the countdown period to the Hong-Kong hand-over. These films watch events unfold through the eyes of local people. They represent the different communities and the different social strata of Hong Kong – from street people to tycoons, from expatriates to the new Chinese administrators. In so doing we make this a personalised story instead of a political one. By getting to know these we understand the impact of the transition on a human scale.
