The Amber Sexalogy is a combination of six separate but related films. As part of his initiation into the filmmaking process, in early 2005 Azharr shot six interconnected DV shorts dealing with different moments in the relationship between two people, Harris and Amber. The six parts all stand alone, having very different visual styles and tones, and the suite remains very much a short film project; but when strung together the films also work as an odd kind of hybrid feature. It's probably worth reiterating at this point that the Amber films are exploratory short films by a young filmmaker learning the craft and as such are not intended to function as a conventional entertainment narrative. The films are not without their limitations, but they demonstrate a depth of ambition and thought which bodes well for Azharr's future work.

Aries is the code of living in Heaven, until one day the passion comes and forbidden fruits fall to the earth.' So begins Aries by talented experimental filmmaker Faozan Rizal. This visually arresting work is set against the backdrop of Java's stunning natural beauty. Oscillating between the stark landscape of Cerebon in West Java, and the verdant lushness of Wanagama Forest, Aries is a meditation on the varying expressions of love -- at once passionate and anguished -- between a man and a woman. Despite at times occupying the same physical space, the protagonists each indulge in the privacy of their separate inner-worlds. Richly philosophical in its approach, Aries' appeal comes from the fact that as an experimental work it contains an endless thread of meaning and metaphor for viewers to explore.

Boy meets girl. Boy and girl fall for each other. Do they live happily ever after? The Art of Flirting leads you down this road and to that question, but it's not your typical romance film. It is in the vein of reality TV, with four chapters of a progressing romance, and with an ending that should be left unspoiled here. Lynn is a lifestyle reporter interviewing Leo, a jock turned entrepreneur. Their interview turns into a date as Leo's flirting turns to romancing. Both have been scarred by previous relationships and one night reveal their stories after an intimate dinner at Lynn's home. The intimacy seems a welcoming comfort to both, but an all-too-familiar scenario develops. Many will recognize the path, because they have walked it before, a little romance turns into a desire for attachment. And that's where the fork in the road usually shows up. Will they take one of the forks together, or separate at the fork? What sustains this little drama are the actors and their smart dialogue. We are voyeurs, asking if they would make a good match, wondering what the next move will be.

This filmic offering by acclaimed director Prasanna Vithanage (Walls Within and Death on a Full Moon Day) is a poignant narrative of human displacement against the backdrop of the bitter, real-life conflict between the Sinhalese and Tamil people of Sri Lanka. The film traces the experience of three individuals, each of whom is affected by the war in different ways. Chamari enlists the aid of a London-based journalist to help locate her husband, a pilot who was captured by the Tamil Tigers; a young Muslim boy Arfath tries to keep his dog, even as his family joins thousands of other Muslims in a mass exodus to escape the conflict; and Dumida, a lonely young soldier, discovers that his sister has been working as a prostitute in a brothel that serves both Sinhalese and Tamil soldiers. All of these events, presented from a Sinhalese perspective, take place under the searing heat of a hot August sun and the weight of lengthy civil war. Awards/Festivals: Grand Jury Prize and nominated Lino Brocka Award Cinemanila International Film Festival 2003; Grand Prix des Amriques Montreal World Film Festival 2003; FIPRESCI/NETPAC Award Singapore International Film Festival 2004; Amiens International Film Festival 2003; International Film Festival Rotterdam 2004; Deauville Asian Film Festival 2004.

Following the assassination of Lebanese Prime Minister Rafic Hariri in February 2005, thousands of Lebanese youths spontaneously set up camps in Beirut's Martyrs' Square to rally for an independent Lebanon. However, these youths, who had been born during the civil war that started in 1975, find that not all Lebanese are united as one -- different religious sects, political sects and visions for a future Lebanon keep them deeply divided. Through the experiences of twenty-five-year-old Nadine Zaidan, we get a firsthand look at the passionate debates among Lebanese youths as they discuss hot-topic issues such as the Syrian occupation of Lebanon, Hezbollah and America's intents towards Lebanon. Awards/Festivals: First Prize, IMA Film Festival, Paris; Best Documentary Feature Film, Asia Pacific Screen Awards; Special Tribute, Ismailia Festival, Egypt.
